Fuel Gauge and Sender info

Post by compunerdy »

Was messing around with my fuel gauge and sender today as I am installing a digital gauge and figured I would share some info I found.

First off my VDO sender specs..

5 ohms Full
87 ohms Empty
Mounting Flange is 2.8" OD
Mounting holes on 2-1/8" diameter (54mm) and has 5 holes.
13" Long from flange
1.58" tube diameter

I (roughly) measured from the top of the tank to the bottom and got 17". After doing some research I found this tube sender which is 15.75" long.

From reading other sites it looks to be a 90-0 (90 full 0 empty as far as I can tell) but is used with VDO adjustable gauges such as this 24v one.

It looks to me that if you wanted to change the sender to the one listed (around $60) and change to the gauge listed (around $30) you could have a more accurate fuel reading (deeper in the tank). I know I read some of you have adjustable ones already so you would not need to change the gauge (maybe).

I stuck a tube inside to see at what point the sender would hit the pickup tube and it was around 14.5". I am not sure if you can massage the pickup tube to the side and out of the way yet or not but they do have a 14.5" (and many other length) sender as well..

Found some more info..

In the parts book it lists the fuel sender as VDO 224.817/008/002 so I googled that and there was one listing for a german (I think) PDF from VDO.

This shows the sender as 13" long (331mm) a with a range of 2.2 ohms full to 84.4 ohms empty.
