Electrical Upgrades For A Factory Restored 710M?
I've recently been talking with the guys at the Puch factory in Austria for a frame-off 710M restoration. The head of their custom vehicle department has told me they're willing to install any upgrades I'd like, such as the PinzSSI solid state electronic ignition and Classis SUE disc brake kit.
Anyone know of any other worthwhile factory or aftermarket upgrades I should specify?

TD high speed tranny with 712, 2 speed gear box. That's only if you plan on putting allot of road miles on it.

Surprised you are considering doing a frame-off restoration on a 710M - most have done a 710K as they seem to always go for a higher price. Just curious...
If it's an issue of the additional height of the roof hatch - it can be deleted. Sounds like they will do whatever you want...

I'm a motorcycle guy. Hence a 710M has vastly more appeal to me than a K.

I owned a factory restored 1974 710M about 13 years ago. It was an Austrian version, and was as good an new. If you can afford it, this would be the way to buy a Pinzgauer.
I sold it after about a year, as someone made me an offer I couldn't refuse. As a replacement a bought a 710M radio truck.
Get the lock-out reverse shifter.

If you haven’t bought a 710M, look at a 716 or 718 . All the upgrades everyone talks about are stock TD items, except the TD trans with the 712 transfer case. That combo is still a poor substitute for the TD transfer case (which can not be fitted to a 710/12).
Plus with the TDs you get power steering, 100amp alternator. Then let the factory upgrade the engine to the last 2.4l that was used in the P93 (w/innercooler).
If you do a side by side cost comparison (with factory fees), it may be an interesting bottom line between the two… and possibly higher than what GG is worth.
By the time you complete a resto with the factory, a 1990 to 1991 will probably be legal to import... the problem will be locating a LHD "M".

Nicholas, do you realize you're talking about mods that alone will cost twice what a 710M will. Factory mods and parts are quite expensive. Consider David Dunn's advice. You're already into 716 territory.

A Pinz purchase is like a motorcycle purchase as far as I'm concerned: recreation rather than mere transportation. Therefore, "value" has little value. Emotional attachment is much more important.
Nonetheless, although I like aircooled engines more than anything else simply out of principle, and although I like the 710's appearance more than the 716's, I'm quite willing to hear counsel. I have dabbled with the idea of a 716 because it's equipped with a diesel, and in my opinion the only thing better than a petrol engine is a diesel engine.
But my concern is that 716s aren't easily imported into the USA. Am I wrong? Are there some already here in the States that I could choose from that are already properly registered and titled?

You are right, a legal 716 is not an easy thing to obtain in the US to say the least. The chances of someone selling one of those very few exceptions that have made it here is almost non-existent. 25 years or older doesn't make the, generally 1988+ 716's, realistic just yet. Also finding one that age that would be worth buying in Europe is a whole other task.
