Turn Signal Light Coming On With Braking

Post by jrcotner »

And another thing. Same trip as previous post, but I noticed that occasionally the turn signal light would come on for one blink during braking. I looked through the manual and it only mentions the brake light on the dash as a warning light, nothing about the turn signal light. Brake fluid is topped up and my knees were no where near the turn signal lever. Any ideas?
Thanks,

There are a lot of switch contacts and connections within the turn signal/four way flashers/brake light wiring. If the turn signal switch contacts get poor, or if the four-way switch contacts get poor, either can cause a problem. A "one blink" event means there is some sort of contact that changes after one blink. An iffy ground might also appear to do the same, but switch contacts are intended to be made and broken as the switch moves, so I would expect them to be more likely. The four-way switch is easy to open up and clean and grease, but first thing is to "work" the contacts several times and see if you get a change (for better or worse), this will help you to hone in on the problem.

Thanks. I'll fiddle with it and see if things change. I'll also check grounds, since I went through some water and may also have some salt corrosion.

I fiddled around a bit, and things seemed to have cleared up. But now the turn signal light blinks once every ten seconds or so just driving down the road.

Your turn signal switch could be junk. The switch out of a 1971 VW Bus works perfectly, Airhead Parts sells them, and even the color codes are the same.

Here's the specific one I bought. It even cancels most of the time, unlike the previous one-

I've used the repro VW unit from Airhead and it works nicely. More recently though I've used the Austrian version of the oem unit and found it to be a better quality for not much more money.

However the wiring on it is intended for use with trucks that have had the red brake light conversion done. Most likely you've already done this?

Stock rocks. So, those of us that refuse to convert, what switch do we use?

I was referring to the brake light wiring modification, not the replacement of the stock tailights.

Just to follow up, I replaced the flasher with the NAPA part, and it cleared up the turn signal indicator flashing intermittently and when braking. It also isolated the turn signal switch problem. The right turn detent is worn and won't maintain a signal. I'll replace with the VW unit. Thanks for all of your help.

I am looking for this switch, but the links in this post do not work for me. Can someone help me find where I can get the Turn Signal switch referenced?

Here's a fresh link to the Austrian turn signal switch at SAV: https://www.pinzgauer.com/showdetails.p ... 7113860180

It does require the wiring modification of the tail lights so that the brake lights are red.
