Pinzgauer shock rebound vs compression

Long time Lurker first time poster- What a resource!!!! I'm a long time Pinz owner -1974 710M. Drove her stock (except for black spray paint on the bumpers and new batteries )for about 5 years and then she sat for 10+ years. I decided to get her running to sell, but after I started resurrecting her I remembered how amazing this thing is, so..... Now I'm modifying it for me to keep- and I have lots of questions.
Anyways- I decided to replace the shocks and paint up the springs. I noticed when I removed the shocks that they don't offer much resistance during the compression stroke, but have incredible resistance to extension. Completely different from the NAPA replacements. Based on the engineering of this thing I am thinking that this is by design. And now I'm thinking I may just sand and repaint the originals. Anyone have any experience with this?

I feel a little more at ease about my shocks- I found this chart in the repair manual. I think it means that the shocks do indeed have much more force required to rebound or extend versus to contract. It makes me wonder about all those replacement shocks breaking bolts.

Interesting read Vince, thanks for the link. Does anyone know whether the Doetsch shocks are still available?

According to Doetsch's WEB site they are available.
http://doetschshocks.com/i-10289113-8132-pinzgauer.html

I'd call to be sure and ask them if they corrected the sleeve I.D. issue,
several people recently had an issue getting the M16 bolt through. Maybe
they flipped to SAE from Metric and formed these to 5/8" ://

Would be nice to know what's up as in spite of the apparent sleeve issue
these were the best replacement shocks for the Pinz with proper valving.
They work great on my 710 -- big improvement.

To solve the sleeve issue when I installed the Doetsch shocks, I pressed the sleeves out of the original shocks and installed them in the Doetsch shocks. The original sleeves are very well made. This is a bit more work but does solve the problem.

And as Ron said, they are very nice shocks and really improve the ride.

I put Doetsch shocks on a couple years ago and they certainly made a big difference. Easy install. I purchased mine from EI and the sleeve issue had been corrected. Unfortunately, I don't see them on their site on my quick search. It might be worth a call.

I purchased a set of Doetsch shocks directly from Doetsch Enterprises in March, 2019. No sleeve issue. Below is the part description and item number:

8132-Pinzgauer
Item# 8XXX-PINZ
