Oversized brake shoes?

Post by whitesik »

Hi everybody! I have finally decided to tackle the brakes on my 710K; a long overdue job. I don't think the drums have been resurfaced before so my plan is to have them turned, knowing the max is 287mm +.2mm, if necessary. My question centers around the need for "oversized shoes". SAV sells these for drums turned to 287mm but is it really needed? It looks to me there should be enough adjusting screw to deal with the extra 1mm for the fronts per screw, and 2mm total in the rear. Am I wrong? Do I need to order the oversized shoes? Will these shoes work with OEM new 285 drums if needed in the future? Thanks in advance.

Did this brake overhaul a few weeks ago. Drums and Shoes.

After turning all four were well under the 287 max limit.

I stuck with the standard size and after braking them in,
followed by a second adjustment they are great.

Unless you are at the MAX limit, I'd avoid the larger shoes.
They too will need to be broken in, rather than at the crown,
top of the shoe, they will need to wear in at the ends. And
if you are well under 287 you might find the larger radius
shoes a too snug a fit.

Thanks Ron! I knew somebody out west would chime in. I am going to see if they can be turned this morning. I have no way to know if it has already been done by a prior owner already but I doubt it. 57,000km on the vehicle.

I brought my drums to a small local machine shop. They let me
walk their shop, I was looking for what jobs they did besides turning
drums. Saw heads and other engine parts at various stages and they
looked good. So I felt these guys won't peel all the meat off my drums.

I asked them to take off as little as possible and make sure the pairs
internal diameter were close. After I got them back they were about
0.5mm larger in diameter PLENTY left for future turnings. I doubt a
a franchise Tire or Brake shop like Midas would have the same results.

As I mentioned, thee shoes will need to seat themselves by wearing in.
I did a preliminary adjustment, to the point where the brake pedal travel
was decent, then put on a few hundred miles with braking. I just
readjusted them and all 6 slaves needed at least one to two more click.

I may be sorry but all of my slave cylinders appear to be good and not leaking so I am not replacing them. I did not want to risk creating more problems trying to get the brake lines off. rubber hoses also appear good.

The Slave cylinders are easily rebuilt in place W/O touching any of the fittings.
That's assuming of course the inside bores are free of corrosion. If not then
there's the risk of "Plumbers ripple effect" ://

I retrieved my drums after resurfacing today and all but one look great. One was found to be cracked so I have to order new anyway.
