Tapered Brake Switch Light?

Post by Smiley »

Hello All,

Picked up a 712m and working through a few issues. The brake light switch needs to be replaced. I went and purchased one from napa that was referenced here on the boards. It had a tapered thread and the original was reported to be non-tapered and have a copper washer around it. I decided to buy the real deal from SAV. Sadly when I received the part it too was tapered with no ring (unlike the picture on their site). I called up SAV and they said to use teflon and just tighten it in. This doesnt seem right to thread in a tapered thread into a non-tapered part. I did send an email to the parts department and ask this same question but wanted to see what people were doing on their trucks. Can anyone please chime in on the replacement of this part. Thanks and Merry Christmas.

Not something I’ve replaced however if the one in your truck is not tapered I would not use a tapered one. The chart indicates two possibilities from NAPA for the cross referenced 81 rabbit. http://www.sdp-pinzgauer.org/html/parts_reference.html with a light and a mirror you should be able to tell if yours is tapered or uses a washer without having to remove it.

Hi Guys, Thanks for the links. I did read those threads earlier but am confused because of Swiss Army Vehicles. The switch I bought from them is tapered. The other one I have from Napa (Part # 113 945 515 H - Auma 81 rabbit)is also tapered. Is there a different thread type with the same number? I know people have talked about reusing the copper ring, but I don't see how I can get the ring off the old part without destroying it. This really shouldn't be that tough. I guess I can go back to Napa and see if I can get a straight thread.

Do some people have tapered master cylinders brake light plug threads? Or could someone have put a straight thread into a tapered plug and sealed it with the copper ring? This is all new to me so just trying to learn. Thanks again.

Jim LaGuardia wrote:It is a Mercedes part and VW part. You must use the short un-tapered thread version with copper sealing washer.
Using the tapered thread type will damage master cylinder and leak
Switch can be installed without bleeding if done quickly. After installing new switch, pump brake pedal 30 times to expell any air from master back to reservior and check for leaks.
If it were me I’d go by Jim’s advice.

Needing to replace the brake switch, called SAV. The only one they have available is the tapered kind. Said they have been selling/using them for years
with no adverse effects.
I am getting so much conflicting information on this from the site and the mechanics. If the one supplied by the parts folks is not right...what gives?
Can't operate without brake lights, what now/

If there is anything available that is really better/more correct where to get it and if there is a part number, what is it?

Feeling really lost here folks.

I've installed the SAV tapered units in 2 different 710's with no problem. They have worked just fine with no leaking. Maybe I've just been lucky but that's not usually the case

Thanks Paul. Always good to hear some faint voice of reason in the midst of personal turmoil.

I've ordered the switch. I am trusting that it will work...has to be better than the one that doesn't.
Did you use any teflon tape to help seal it when you installed it? It has been suggested by the
folks at SAV.

Yes, I did use the teflon tape as suggested.

Good luck!

Just received the 'new' brake light switch from SAV. The threaded section is about 1/3 longer than the
original that I removed. If it is tapered the taper is so subtle that is difficult to discern any taper at all.
I expected (by looking at the photo on their site for parts) that it would be so much more evident, but I
will concede that there is a taper, none the less.
I will apply some teflon tape prior to install...any specific type? I intended to use the type that I use for
all my plumbing...the white stuff, not the yellow.
I'll put it in tomorrow and see what happens to the system.

What an absolute joke. The PROPER non-tapered switch is readily available. The idea that it is acceptable to use a pipe thread switch in a Metric straight thread application is garbage. The idea that it is being portrayed as acceptable "with a little teflon tape..." to make the seal is just as bad.

These will be available from most foreign auto houses as it is a very common metric brake switch. Are you guys really willing to bastardize your trucks over $5-10 on the brake system?

Cheers,

The one I installed last year was not tapered, as Scott says, they are readily available.

When I had to replace one of mine I just took the old switch to the local VW shop and they handed me a switch that looked exactly like what I had. $4.99 and a few minutes all better, that was several years ago to the point I had almost forgot about it.

It's really wonderful to have all this great advice on the proper switch after I get the one that SAV sells. I would think that they, being the suppliers for this vehicle, would actually have the proper parts for them.
Guess not. Very disappointing to deal with a parts dealer to get the wrong stuff. Where do I go now?

Now that it is in and works, I'll leave it.
