Tire similiar in size to original Maloyas?

Post by Hersir »

Would a BFG Mud Terrain KM2 LT235/85R16 be equivalent in size to the original Maloya tires used by the Swiss Army? I understand the overall diameter of the LT235/85R16's is 32 inches. Would these be good tires for mild to moderate off-roading with some local highway time between home and dirt?

Thanks.

You can easily put 265 85 16 BFG's, this will better your highway speeds and do well for most off roading. I have the 255 85 16 Maxxis Bighorns on my 710M, they are similar to the BFG's but less expensive.

If I remember well, the 235/85 size is slightly smaller than the original Maloyas and the 255/85 size is slightly bigger, both in diameter and width (Maloyas being about 245 in width).

I will need to verify, but last summer I believe I put 265/75/16 goodyears on mine and they are wider and about the same height as the Maloya....great size at any rate

Hey Guys.

I found this thread because I am curious about tire sizes....mainly because I cannot get into my garage with the inflated BFG A/T 285/75/R16  . I found a used set of nice tires in 235/85/R16 and I was wondering how they will affect highway speed? After calculations, they are 1" smaller than the 285s....

Will 285s fit on stock rims? I read something about 285s being on widened rims....and I couldn't tell you if mine are widened...

I believe I read somewhere on here that the stock Maloyas are 245/75; if they in fact have a 75% aspect ratio, then a 235/85 will actually be a little bigger diameter even though they are 10mm narrower. From what I've researched, the 235/85 should have the most similar size in general to the stock Maloyas. I don't think I've seen any new tires available in 245, just 235 and 255. I think I may go with the 235 BFG/MT's personally.

In case anyone is interested, this tire sizing calculator is great. It lets you visualize both sets of tire sizes on top of each other in a side and end view...

I've built a pretty good tire size / RPM calculator in EXCEL. Unfortunately you can't attach a file with a .xls extention. PM me if you need it with an e-mail address and i'll sent it to you.

This thread got me interested in pricing some tires and as it turns out, they do make the BFG/MT's in 245; but they are more expensive than the 255's or 235's.

Just replaced the 285/75R16 BFG A/T shoes with a model available to us Canucks at Canadian Tire....Goodyear Wrangler Territory. I finally went with 265/75R16 as I will save an inch and get into my garage! They also have a very nice pattern and get great reviews....The BFGs should be sold this weekend.

I put BFG km2 mud terrain 265/75/16 on about a month ago. They are just a little bigger than the maloyas.

Tires made a huge difference over the original maloyas.

It's a year and a half later since I started this thread and I want to thank everyone for the feedback and photos. One of my biggest considerations in replacing my tires is squeezing into a residential garage. Currently, I have the BFG M/T 285/75/16 which are 33.1" in diameter. I've saved up some money and will be replacing them with the same tire but size down to 265/75/16. This will give me 1.2" of additional clearance which should be just enough and they're pretty close to the original tire size.

Many thanks again.
