The UK Military Pinzes were fitted with 8.25-16 Michelin XZLs ( even the 710/12s...if they actually kept any  ). I have them on my 716.
I personally think they are a bit too tall .

Stuart - With you on the width thing - I'm running 285/75/16s on my comp Landy and they are a big tyre compared with the stock Pinz tyres, hence the 255/85/16 discussion.

You used to be able to buy 950/33/16s here (in Simex and similar) but aint seen them for a while.... :?

David - interesting - what is the equivalent modern size, any idea? Guess these would also be like hens teeth anyway....

I don't know of a new designation for the 8.25s, but the 9.00-16s are 255/100-16 ( I was trying to locate these for my 101 Vampire a few years back).
Nigel would probably have a better idea to what you have available over there.
A 265 would probably suit you fine unless you're where you can do a lot of high speed driving. If you do mostly driving in rolling hills, the 265 would be even better.

On 710 and 712 I always fit 265/75/16 these give the same rolling dia. as the origional Maloyas, on 716 and 718, P80 and P90, 235/85/16 and on P93s 285/75/16. My personal preference is BFG mud terrain, these were factory fit on the last Pinzgauers produced and I find them the best compromise tyre. ( though not the cheapest )

Hi Nigel,
I had the 265/75 on my 710, and later the 255/85 on my 712. Both were good fit for the applications, though there is only limited type of tires in the 255/85.
Though ATL had published the BF Goodriches in their lit, the MoD Pinzes had XZL 8.25s ( from what I'd seen) and the 718s that came out of our GL also had 8.25s. One of my old 710/12 manuals had listed the 8.25s for the 710/12 for UK use, but imo the tires are way too tall for the Gassers.... and the diesels for that matter too.
My preference are the 255/85 over the 285/75 for the most part, same diameter, and the 255s can easily air down to the 285 footprint without as much fear of debeading ( on the same size rim). The narrower tire mean less road resistence, and easier slow speed steering for the 710/12.

I might do some scounging for a set of 235s to see how the 716 likes them "on road".... I know the people I off road with won't... they're already peeved when I idle up or down a hill  ... the shorter tires would only make it worse.

Hi David.
I've had a few ex Swedish 716s and some 718 fire engines through my shop and these were all fitted with 235/85/16s, and they all drove very well on them. My own P93 716 came fitted with 825/16 michelin XZLs but after fitting the 3litre BMW turbo diesel all it did was spin the rear wheels :D they were just too narrow to put the power down on the road. I've since changed to 285/75/16 BFG Mud Terrains on 7Jx16 rims and it behaves much better. I agree that the petrol models suit the 255/85/16s but the choice of tyre is very limited in that size.
Nigel.

Gee Nigel, I'd have never taken you for a lead footed Yank!

My Swedish 716 had Cooper MT 255/86-16s at the corners, and a Semperit 225/75-17.5 as a spare ! Figure how that made it from Austria to Sweden.. :?

After having had a couple of petrol Pinnies, when I rebuilt the ex-MOD 716 I decided for once it would be nice to have a bit more power than I needed rather than not quite enough, and not being a great fan of the 2.4 VW I considered the BMW to be the best option, it proved itself last weekend towing a dead Daimler Dingo back from a show, it didn't even notice it was on the back.

We do a lot of Trophy and Trips in Europe and Africa with Petrol Pinzgauers and the best tire size is the 255/85 R 16. BFG MT KM1 or KM 2.

The Michelin 255/100 XZL is much too tall. The Michelin 8.25 XZL is a bit higher than the 255/85 but narrow and expensive but very reliable on stony drive.

255/85 R 16 and 8.25 R16 do have the permition from SDP since many years to be used on 710/712.

For serious trophy in wet/muddy conditions there is Interco LTB 08. Narrow Swamper in 34x10,5 R 16.
In Europe really hard to get at the moment.
Simex / Silverstone with the Extreme Trekker Profile has the best traction in Mud but in 33" too small and in 35" too big - also hard to get at the moment.
