Pulling Master Cylinder

Post by Buzz »

Gents,
I have the master unbolted and Iines disconnected. But the left wall of the truck blocks pulling it all the way off. Do I need to pry off the reservoirs and/or unscrew the brake light switch? I could just pull harder but I don't want to break something. Thanks

Yes, remove the brake light switch and the reservoir. Then lift the left end of the master cylinder as you pull it away from the booster module.

Hey... Take some pics while you are at it. This is my next major project. :D

If you don't mind, let us know how your project goes. Thanks,

Thanks for your response pcollete. This is a job I have put off for months and I did not want to dig a hole unnecessarily through frustration.
I took off the brake sensor and was able to get it out with the reservoir attached. I then pried the reservoir off with the cylinder held in a vice. That plastic is much stronger than I would have thought. Its easier to push the resevoir back in to the new cylinder than to pull it out. Bolting it back up took less time than it did to write this post.
Thanks again!

Hey John, I did not see your post before I did the job. But, honestly it turned out to be easier than many others I have done on this truck. I bought a rebuilt master from EI wihich simplifies the job. It's not that much more money for the trouble saved.

Did you replace the rubber grommets that hold the reservoir? If you're lucky they won't leak but most of the time they don't like to be disturbed and once they have been then it becomes a constant seep that can be misleading as if the new master cylinder is leaking again. Keep an eye on it if you didn't change 'em.

Yes, new grommets came with the rebuilt cylinder. Do you recommend Loctite on the bolts to the booster?

I just used split-ring lock washers like were on it but I can't imagine it would hurt to use some Loctite.
