Air cooled with disc brakes.

Are there any 710s with air cooled engines and disc brakes? If so what year? I've read there are some after 1980 that started to get some of the redesign's elements. Can you buy front axles and retrofit them?

I think they briefly offered something like that in Australia - but the portal axles ratios are different in the air-cooled vs diesel versions so if you did swap over the later brakes and portals you need to do it on all four (or six) wheels and also need a different master cylinder as well.

Vince used to own a 712M that had this swap done - it was the race truck he rolled unfortunately. I think the different portal ratios are OK on a 712 but would be an issue on a 710...

The other option are aftermarket kits - GUT Automotive out of Switzerland offers them - but the cost is extremely high - some thing like 5 grand for the parts for four wheels...

There also where conversions done on the Red Bull trucks - not sure how they were done though - I think Jim (Goatwerks) knows more about them.

I think that the drums are pretty decent when adjusted properly and would bother with a swap myself - especially since it would require a lot of work to get the front rear balance right and should include a couple of other things such as a load proportioning valve and it still wouldn't have ABS included to handle the higher braking power.

IIRC, there was a link to a European company that sold disc brake kits posted here a while back. Maybe try a search here. They'd fit 710s or 712s, I'd assume.

I believe it's this company that posted on this forum a while ago:

I've seen the classic-sue site. I wasn't sure about their parts as I don't speak German. I'll e-mail them and if I get a response I'll post it here.

Classic-sue just got back to me. It's 2200 Euros per wheel front and 2000 Euros per wheel back. Then it's another 1400Euros for the master cylinder, lines, and proportioning valve.

Great, that works out to about $19,000 for a 712.

Not really, I own a factory original 4X4 air-cooled, disc-braked Pinzgauer http://members.westnet.com.au/profpinz/ ... ybrids.htm but in actual fact it was one of a couple of prototypes made by SDP in the early 1980's to tender for an Australian Military Vehicle contract.

Why do you call it a "710-1.6" model? Cargo weight rating is higher?

One of these days I plan to just try and machine a custom backing plate and do my own setup as ones like classic sue are way overpriced.

That's a very good question and to be honest I don't know.......... that's what the official SDP factory papers list it as been called.

Hey Peter,
It’s very simple… the engineers knew there wasn’t enough improvements to be a version 2, but figured they were a little over half way there, hence version 1.6. :P

Very good Dave :-) :-)

.......err, actually you may be closer to the truth than you think.

I understand their is a sister vehicle to mine running around in Austria/Europe but with a radiator fitted (I need to get the designation number for it) but if the number is higher you maybe onto something :|

If I remember well, Classic-Sue's setup has a different lug pattern than stock. They provide the wheels, but it does add to the price. I had considered doing just the front axle on my 710, but I still needed to change all 5 wheels, and they aren't cheap...
