Pinzgauer articulation
Pinzgauer articulation
Started experimenting to see how much single wheel and cross wheel articulation a Pinzgauer actually has. My ramps are just over 8 inches high and there was no wheel lift. Has anyone gone further and knows the limit? (It was rainy. I was bored.)

Measure your limiting straps.

Re: Pinzgauer articulation
That's a good idea and takes care of the wheels going down, sort of, after first finding the length of the independent suspension arm, the point along its arc where the straps attach and the length to the end outer edge of the wheel. Then I will have to find the rest angle of the axle angle. After that will follow some trig to get the maximum angle of declination at the wheel. The weight shift to loaded wheels will of course cause them to compress the springs. Perhaps you could help with the math or computer modelling here as it is only one rainy afternoon here and this is getting to be less fun playing with my truck and more math and less experimentation than I can tolerate without throwing my pencil down in disgust and just building taller ramps or driving screaming to the kids skateboard park and finding a feature that will give me an answer and a cool photo!

Re: Pinzgauer articulation
To paraphrase some old movie: "Articulation? What articulation?! We don't need no stinking articulation! We have diff locks!"
Well, we don't have much compared to other vehicles. Frankly, I can't see what is going on while driving, but I've had passengers look out and say "you had that front wheel 3-1/2 to 4 feet off the ground!". Really thrills the Jeepers.

I've had that same response from jeepers...'you were at least 3 feet off the ground on that left rear, isn't that scary?'
Can't tell from inside here and I didn't have time to think about it.

Jeep people freak when you get a wheel off the ground because if that happens in a Jeep you are pushing the limit.

I know I am still a rook, but articulation is a good thing. You are a better, or different driver, when piloting a Pins.

Re: Pinzgauer articulation
I bet a jeep guy I could get my tire up higher on an articulation ramp then he could. He tried first and did OK for a jeep. When he cleared the ramp I took my pinz, and well won the bet although he said I cheated as I was supposed to stop once a tire came off the ground. Told him that is just not the way a pinz works.

Re: Pinzgauer articulation
Exactly. Who gives a damn whether your truck can articulate, when you can drive further up the obstacle than they can?
Don't get me wrong, I'm not diss'ing Jeeps. I own a CJ5. But I see nothing ignoble about having a wheel or two off the ground, and my Pinz definitely goes places my Jeep can't.

Re: Pinzgauer articulation
Have a look at Youtube vids of the Landrover LR3/4 which is considered the best mainstream 4wd available. They do not have much articulation and have wheels in the air all the time and rely on their traction systems.
The Pinz is no different - once their traction systems are engaged articulation is not an issue. I have a Landrover FC 101 and like the Pinz has poor wheel articulation unless loaded with a tonne. It suffers as a result but with diff locks fitted this is not an issue at all.
Not such an issue if you have traction aids but is an issue with open diffs.

Nice comparison. I own a CJ-5, and a JK (current Wrangler) along with my 710. I feel much more at ease in off camber situations in either Jeep vs the Pinz.
