710K roof rack

Post by djw »

I'd still like to find an original K roof rack if anyone knows where one can be had.

Alternatively I'm looking for a low profile rack for my K for very light duty stuff. Not particularly high so I can get into my parking spot. Probably rig it with some form of heat barrier for the summer to keep the cabin cooler, not really wanting to paint my roof white.

Thanks for any point outs.

The only solution that I like is Frontrunner. Look for the Japan export 710K I set up for a client a few years back. I put one on it and it was like a factory made one. I used the same model they sell that fits the G-wagen (go figure)

Nice. I wonder what can be done over the cab and hatch. Does look factory indeed, probabably better/lighter.

Is that a bone stock g-wagen rack?

Yep. I'm 90% sure the feet were the same for the G too. This was purposely set up to be a 3/4 rack to keep the hatch functioning. (You have a SWB one pictured by the way) You can make them longer.

That's the beauty of their design- Make it longer, shorter, add a huge array of stuff that bolts onto it and wont fly off, no bungees or bullshit, and far stronger than they look.. and its extruded aluminum so no rust, ever!

The ladder was made by Andre.

I put one on my ex-G as well. I built it from spare parts from Frontrunner's scratch-and-dent bin so I did it super cheap. (They are located 10 minutes from me!)

I added an extension piece they sell to make it the exact length I needed it.

Sounds like the perfect and re-configurable solution.

They're out of stock on G racks. I sent them a note but they read email once per week.

I cant recall what exactly he has but you may want to ask Andre at Fat Fab about some Frontrunner pieces he has (or had). You might be able to build one from what he has by ordering just the parts needed to finish it. What you mainly need are the slats which fit the measurement wanted, including the front and rear main pieces. The sides and corners are the same on all of them. Then you'd just need the feet, 4, 6 or 8, depending on how long you are making it and how much weight you plan to put on it.

Thanks for the info. Talking with the guys @ Frontrunner, they changed their leg design and don't have those in the pic any more, plus all their G parts seem to be sitting on the dock awaiting customs at present. I have time. After my careful measurements they think their current short leg is a hair too short for the Pinz, might have to use the longer. We'll see.

Given that my parking spot is one I don't want to lose, there's about 7" over my current obstructions on top without doing any mods to the truck or building. What I decided to do is get a couple of FR load bars and test fit across the top in various locations to see what I can get away with. I get how they assemble and extend to do most any size. May take the current antenna cap off. The load bars are standard slats and legs with a couple of plastic caps on the slats. I can re-use these parts on the final rack when I get the size right. Just waiting on them now.

Did you check with Andre? He really may have some parts that you will want and I assume the drive there isnt too far.
