manual winshield washer pump

I have the manual washer pump and it does not work. The discharge of the pump has a functioning check valve as expected, but the suction side does not. I figured there might be a foot valve in the bottle. When I looked there was not one but you could tell by the look of the hose something use to be there. The parts book shows it as "sieve for hose".

Does anybody know if this part contains the suction check valve?

I think that the suction side has a check valve too: unfortunatly it's often stuck and the pump doesn't work. I found a solution: dip the entire pump one night in water with a little wash liquid: my pump worked perfectly after that...

Any car parts store has a large selection of washer system check valves. Put one on each side of the pump (properly oriented) and it will draw up fluid and squirt.

I put a "vacuum check valve" on the suction side and now I squirt like a teenager.

Just to add:

Mine never worked, but as soon as I was patient and pumped it enough times to get fluid into the pump assembly, it then worked as expected. It's not a strong squirt, but may be adequate.

For those with the manual (original) system, how high does the fluid squirt onto the windshield on your truck?
