Lots of good threads on speedometer repair, but didn't see any on speedometer removal. I'm ready to take mine out for repair or replacement. Here's what I'm guessing needs to be done.

Remove the burled trip odometer knob on the front side of the dash via the set screw, and the nut on the dash front side to release the trip odometer cable.
Disconnect the speedometer light wire on the back of the speedometer.
Undo the large brass nut (white arrow) between the speedometer and the 90 degree angle fitting that the speedometer cable attaches to, freeing the speedometer from the fitting
Remove the burled nuts on the "U" shaped retention bracket to allow the speedometer to be pulled out from the front side.
Pull the speedometer out from the front side of the dash.
Am I correct or am I missing something?

I think you have it covered. The 90 degree angle fitting is optional; I think if you check it carefully you will find that the output (the side that goes into the speedo) is several percent faster than the input. If your mechanical speedo reads faster than it should, remove the 90 degree unit and connect the cable directly into the back of the speedo - the indicated speed will drop a bit.

Thanks, I do run a GPS all the time to help me convert to mph and I think the speedometer is pretty close. I'll check it for sure before I remove it.

I checked the speedometer reading against my GPS today. The speedometer with the 90 degree unit reads about 10% faster than the GPS. 80 km/h is 72 km/h on the GPS. 60 km/h is 54 km/h on the GPS. I do have BFG KM2 265/75R16's, spec OD Is 31.9", and I understand the OEM Maloyas are 31" OD. The tire change should make the speedometer read 3% slower than the GPS though, not faster. But the Maloyas have no flex like the BFG's do, so I think the actual OD's are closer than 3%.

Take it off, hook the speedo cable directly to the speedo, and report back...

Didn't the Swiss add the 90 unit to read higher so the young soldiers would keep the speed down but think they were going faster?

I know this thread is several years old but today I decided to pull and lube my speedometer cable. I was curious on my speedo reading vs GPS with and without the 90° widget.

My test results are shown below.

In the end I decided to remove the adapter from my truck mostly because my speedo operated so much smoother. Needle was rock steady with no bounce. With the widget installed I was getting needle bounce at mid to higher speeds.
