710M to be changed from LH to RH drive

LH drive vehicles are no longer allowed in South Africa unless they were previously registered here – has someone considered or even changed a truck from LH to RH drive? I had a look at one and this is what I observed:

Moving the steering assembly to the RH side with the sector shaft going through the tub with the distance mirrored to accommodate all the original components
Refit complete pedal assembly to the RH side with new brake and clutch master cylinder fluid lines
Mirror the dash/steering support and "sissy” bar
Moving the hi/low shift lever to the RH side by extending the shaft through the air duct.
Refit the accelerator pedal to the RH side and actuate the engine fulcrum with a cable from there
Mirror the instruments and switches to accommodate wiring lengths
Gearshift requires further thought but an option is to lengthen the lever and crank it to the right, halfway over the engine cover
Handbrake to be left as is.

Am I missing something? Comments would be much appreciated.

Would be best to just buy a RHD Pinz
Anything can be done with time and money but the gear shift will give you the biggest problem - perhaps try to find a RHD tranny.
With that train of thought - perhaps you can search for a wrecked RHD one in Europe and just get all the parts you need?

Nope, you would probably need to go to Shropshire Gunbus and see if they have some old 716 rhd parts lying around

A Passat B5 5 speed gearshift assembly (1999 onwards) with modified cables should take care of the gearshift issue.
This is 5 speed shifter in the correct pattern/layout with a detent for reverse.

The OE gearbox stays in place Albert - the Passat cable shifter will be used to do the gear changing.

I have a RHD converted 710K. I didn't perform the conversion, but I maybe able to help out with photographs. Let me know if you require any info.

Tremendous!
A photo of the steering box with the aluminium floor board removed.
A photo of the gearshift lever showing its position.
Tnx

Hi Merrick
The TD is a different "kettle of fish" from the earlier air cooled motor.
