Loose mirrors

The one thing I haven't been able to figure out is how to disassemble the mirrors. My passenger side is very loose and wobbles out of alignment on the highway. Any tips?

Is the mirror loose on the bracket or is the bracket loose on its base?

The base that mounts to side of door. I understand the articulation forward to swing out of way when opening door wide, but it wiggles inwards towards the door when driving.

The bracket has a tapered lower end that fits into the base mounted to the door. There is a nut on the bottom of the bracket. You should be able to hold the bracket firmly and tighten the bottom nut to further wedge the bracket into the base. Or you may need to disassemble the bracket from the base to make sure nothing is interfereing with tightening the bracket.

Saw your other post - nice looking Pinz!

Thank you. So in theory if I remove the bottom nut the whole assembly should be able to be pulled out the top of the bracket right?

Thanks again!

Correct, though in practice I've generally had to tap upwards on the nut after loosening it a few turns to break free the tapered part from the body mount. Slow and easy does it.

Great. Thanks again for the quick replies!

There is a spring at the bottom of the tapered part that helps keep things locked into the detent. You will also need to verify that the pin which sets in the detent is not broken or sheered off. An emergency trail repair we had to do was replace the pin with a piece of a sixteen penny nail. If the pin is broke it will not matter how tight the nut is.

I got the top assembly apart. The issue appears to be that the detent grooves are set at a location where the mirror sits in the grooves when not properly aligned for normal viewing. I tried to tap the assembly up from the retaining nut on the bottom but it is pretty well fused. We'll see what some WD and other penetrant can do to assist.

I know this post was a while ago; but did you have any luck? I have the same issue. In the middle of a steep uphill climb on a very narrow path I encountered a small tree down and had to power over/through it. Worked great; but lost my mirror. Same story, the bracket and rod seem fine; but the mirror is no longer locking in place at the correct location. The mirror now locks in too far forward. I was able to get the top assembly apart and noted the detents/grooves where the mirror shaft locks in is twisted forward. From Reading P Collet's post it appears I need to lightly tap it from underneath with the bottom nut still in place, but loose? I tried moving/twisting the threaded part with the detents in it and it would not budge; but I did not put any penetrating oil on it nor did I try tapping it. I was afraid to break the mount as they appear hard to come by. :D

It has been a while since I have done mine but it will be much easier if you take the mount off of the truck so you can get it into a vice or other better support than the truck sheet metal. The taper can be very stubborn. Be patient and apply PB blaster or similar for a couple days then pound it. Use a different nut or a punch to avoid destroying the acorn nut. I'd also remove the mirror from the arm. No need for any more bad luck if it is dropped. Once out, you can straighten what ever is bent and see if a new spring is needed. The parts diagram is your friend.
