Four 6mm bolts near top of windshield?

Does anyone know the original military purpose for the four 6mm bolts near the top of the windshield two on each side?

The thin box metal is threaded with only a few threads and they don't seem very strong but they could be significantly stronger with either 6mm or 8mm rivnuts.

I'm thinking of moving my 48 inch wide Yakima Roof Rack to the Pinz and using these as front supports. The antenna Mast will serve well for the rear since the main front to rear tubes on the rack that you mount to are only 26 inches apart.

I just want to understand the original purpose before I mess with them.

as far as i know these threaded inlets were used to hold flags at parades;
thus it would not be wise to expect them to carry any load :-)

if you want to carry a roof rack, extend it to the points where the hinges for the windshield are mounted to the chassis.

They are the mounting point for the front quick release locking clamps for the soft top on an Austrian 710/12 M.
Only the Swiss used the leather straps and footman loops for securing the soft top at the windshield. The Swiss never intended the windshields to be folded down, that is why none have the w/s frame securing bars next to the headlamps

actually if you check your manuals you will see that there was an optional roof rack available. I built one using the same mounting points. I copied the design that was in the book as close as I could. worked very well.

as you can see we carried the supports down to the hinge bolts and secured the rack at the top with the four bolts then land on the antenna mount. Have seen photos with spare tires on this rack along with a rack that was purposely built to carry the spare tire.

The part Number for that frame is 711.3.83.200.2, but Puch does not list it anymore

What manual is that? I just have the betriebsanleitung.

Getting the spare in the roof would let me hang 4 Jerry cans from the hoiat arm im the spare compartment and about 14" of space below that for house batteries (like 4 Trojan T105s).

I just stumbled across this pic of said cab mounted roof rack so I thought I'd add it.
