Mud Flap Replacement

Post by undysworld »

I have a hole in one mud flap.

What's the best method for removing the mud flap weights from my damaged flap, and then reattaching it to the new flap?

Drill and pop rivets? I don't like the idea of pop rivets back there.

The mudflap weights I have seen all used "real" rivets, not pop rivets. Thay can be had from McMaster Carr.

I used SS. m6 bolts with locking nuts. Also I drilled the hole used to mount the mud flap on the rear bumper smaller than the weight hole.

When I took the stock weights off to clean and paint them I covered them with reflective tape before bolting them back. Any extra visibility is good.

I found mud flaps at the local Farm & Fleet for $4.95 each. They measured 19.5" x 17.5". I cut them on my table saw, to duplicate the originals, except that these are 5" shorter in length.

The original rivets used to hold the weight on are two-piece brass (or something similar). They are easily removed with a grinder.

I'm looking at McMaster Carr's rivets, #97451A691, to reinstall the weights.

Mine were attached with bolts and nylon locking nuts. They seem to hold up very well, makes removing and replacing a snap.
