Canvas Dyeing?

Did someone indicate previously that they had dyed their OD green canvas top?

I'm happy with green (actually I'd love to get a new top from that guy in Salida, CO!) but was thinking that it might freshen up the appearance if it was dyed another color or even dyed OD green again.

Has this been done?

What sort of results did you get?

What did you use?

Would you do it again?

I read that to properly dye you must submerse the canvas in very hot water which has the dye mixed in. This means the windows will have to be removed and you will need a large kettle. I also read that there are some spray-on versions, I would like to find that in the right color.

I've dyed canvas tops before (Mine and a few other haflinger tops etc) but the Pinzgauer tops are usually "rubberised vinyl" ... well at least that's what I call it, so I doubt "traditional" dyeing will work.

You can get special vinyl paint that I've had limited success with on small products, but I've never sprayed anything as big as a Pinny top .

Thanks for the input Peter. This isn't a pressing need, just something I was curious about.

I saw a 712 top that Steppinz dyed black years ago. Not sure what he used. It covered well, but looked glossy, and not great IMO.

I went camping last week and a gentleman who owns a billboard company took an old billboard to be used as a tarp. I was surprised to see that the vynil used on billboards is exactly the same we have in our Pinzgauers. The vynil was painted. I will ask him how he does it and get back with you guys....

Carlos - email me if you still want the carpet that I removed from my 712.

I would be very interested to know if vinyl can be dyed or painted?
