AMB-S Box upgrades

Post by bdelaporte »

I am planning to start turning my Ambulance box into a usable camper that is comfortable for the family members to ride in the back. I am putting a RV bench seat that folds flat into a bed towards the front of the box and will be adding a rooftop vent and side windows that I recently purchased.

Does anyone have any experiance in cutting through the box? From what I can see and the little that I have read, it is a finberglass shell (outer) and liner (inner) with solid foam sandwiched in between. I am not aware of any wiring or structural support, at least on the sides. I plan to use a sawzaw to make my cuts. It looks to be about 1.5" thick.

The windows I plan to use are aluminum framed commercial marine grade sliders with screens. As you can see from the photos, I want to have the passengers see out of the box while sitting in the rear bench seat. They will also provide additional ventilation and light for the camper conversion.

Any pics, comments etc from anyone that has already modified their box would be greatly appreciated.

I am using this Russian Pinzgauer as the inspiration for my build, I really like what they have done with their trucks.

The caption above the picture you are referring to states that this is a Russian truck that I found a picture of. I am using the deisgn ideas as a basis for the direction of my build. I wish it were, but it is not my truck.... mine is obvioulsy the other one that I am holding the window against.

The "sand ladders" are available at many Army navy Surplus stores. I saw a bunch in Tampa, FL a few weeks ago.

What were the price of the sand ladders down there...they are kinda hard to come by in the few surplus stores in my area.

I had not asked about them as I was shopping for some Austrian Army field bags for my cab. I will ask on my next trip over to Tampa. I get there a couple times a month. What is a decent price for them?

Mopar, you can't just post a picture and lets us drool about it. Oh, the mystery of what it is, please explain about the vehicle in your picture. :cry:

P.S., maybe a Volvo tanker killer.

Here is a link of an ambulance Pinz, lots of good ideas;
http://www.pinzgauer-overland.co.uk/pinzgauerpage.html

the "Blue Monkey Pinz", and to learn about the trip itself;
http://www.pinzgauer-overland.co.uk/

This helped me a bit, although I didn't have an Ambubox.
I had an aluminum slide-on box built for my 712m.
Fairly easy to put on and take off so that I still have my "pickup" truck which I use frequently for
hauling heavy loads.

Good Luck,
