Bench Seat Backrest

Post by berger »

During my second foray into offroading, some teenagers jumped into the back of my truck while their father followed in his. After a few bumpy bits, I noticed they kept switching bench seats with each other. When I asked why, they told me the lack of foam in the backrests was beginning to hurt a little. Time to fix them!

When I removed the back rests from the frame and popped all the staples, the longest part of the job, the "foam" had become dust! Looked very much like the foam used in the tunnel. Today I picked up some fibre foam which is meant for outdoor use do to its anti-mildew qualities, cut it to fit and stapled the seats back up....Incredibly easy and cheap! Cost me $16 (50% off) for the foam. The rest I had on hand already.

Before...saggy dust!

I completed the bench cushions today when I got home from work. Interesting material they use under the foam. It reminded me of Maple Syrup at a Sugar bush when they pour it over the snow....hmmmmm Maple Syrup.....

Lots of mildew on the foam too, so I am glad I went with a mildew resistant fibre foam. The fibre foam is also more rigid, so I didn't need the stiffness of the pliable wicker material beneath it. I was a little surprised by the lip edge, so I cut it out of the foam. The base of the foam fits the dimensions of the fibre board backing material, so I just traced that. The rest overhangs the frame. The first bench went well, but the second one doesn't sit as nicely. It is tight, just not squished down yet....that will come.

Side note I have a suply contact for the tarp fabric used. except I can not get it OD green anymore. Black and gray is available along with other colors for $10 a yard. You have to be a buisness involved in upolstry to buy from them (with verifable buisness refrances) but since I work for the City I can use the Police Departments account to buy from them. If anyone wants any I will sell it at cost plus $5.00 for my gas to get it.
Lots and lots of foam options there too, but that would probably be better for people to by localy.
