For those that might be interested the leather steering wheel cover referenced in this there are available on Amazon, I just searched for "United Pacific Steering" and it was one of the first items to come up.

Go to a bike (bicycle, not motorcycle) shop and buy a package of black handlebar tape. Mine held up great for years and was a great improvement over the stock wheel. Cheap too!
You could also try a sports store and get tennis racquet grip tape.
