what kind of wood was original on the rub rails ?

All things body, interior, paint, windows, tops... you know.

i just had some new ones made out of white oak. i haven't decided yet if im going to paint them green because it might look nice natural

A light natural stain and varnish them...they will look great. My original ones were painted green. I sanded them and did the stain and varnish route they were
beautiful till I shredded them on a rock at Calico years ago.
