Nutsert Tool

Post by Pinz710m2 »

Can anyone tell me which tool is used to install
the nut inserts that Sarah sells from SAV? I'm
replacing my rub rails and bought a few nutserts
to replace some broken ones and Sarah can't tell
me which tool to use with the inserts she sold me.
Locally, it seems no one has ever seen or heard
of a nutsert or nut insert. On the internet there are
about 5 or 6 different tools ranging from $25 to
$500. (SAV doesn't sell the tools)

Has anyone bought the inserts from SAV? And can
you clue me in on which tool to buy?

Thanks.

Did you do a search here for "nutsert"? The topic has been covered a few times, IIRC, and Paul C has done some research on tools I think. It's all been posted previously.

They're sometimes referred to as rivet nuts or rivnuts as well as nutserts.

Here's a thread that should point you in the right direction: viewtopic.php?f=17&t=5138&hilit=rivet+nut

I get all my rivnut equipment from McMaster Carr.

They also sell the tool.

I made my own.

I did the making of my own tool when I had just 1 rivet (on the safety cage)
and it was the only thing I had to do. When I removed the rails, 4 or 5 of
them were rusted/frozen to the point where the bolt broke off, so I had to drill
the rivet out. Doing it with just a couple nuts and a bolt was a PIA. (My
wrenches were too fat) So I just ordered that wedge shaped tool, since it
was only $20 and I have only 4 or 5 to do. If I had 20, I'd by the fancy long
handled tool. :)

Harold,

Give me a call as I have rivnuts and the installation tools.

I also have weld nuts for the side rails.

If you come over on 6/28. I can show you how to install them and help you.

Mike
