I picked up (or should I say a friend picked one up for me) picked up a kit and converter from Expedition Imports at the Expo in Flagstaff. Finished the install Friday night. Can not seem to get the unit to work. Have done all the trouble shooting provided in the installation instructions from EI and still no go. Went over all the wiring and double checked for correct voltages, still no go. If anything it seems more difficult to steer now. The relays are making the appropriate noises as per directions just does not seem to work. I had such high hopes for this kit from the people that I have spoke with that have experience with it.
Will have to contact EI and see if they have any ideas. I am confident it is something simple but it sure is troubling after spending so much time. EI said they could install them in 4-5 hours now that they have done a few. They must have some really talented folks working there.

Frustrated but still trying to get it working.

How is it being powered? Just wondering if you are delivering enough amperage.

bought the converter that EI sells for the kit. The converter is only serving the steering system.

Sounds like it isn't working - a bum unit perhaps? - I would talk with Scott to troubleshoot and/or replace. I don't think your experience is typical for an electric assist system - they do work!

If it is however your steering "technically" should just go back to manual, not sure why yours would feel heavier?

Mine is enroute, wondering if there is a way to bench test the system with 12v before installation?

I'd be interested to know if the bench was easier to steer.

it's possible. These tires, when deflated, are a " bench" to steer!

going through some more detailed troubleshooting this weekend. Hopefully good news will come of it. Really hoping it is something simple.

I would tap one battery ( to get +12 volts and full amperage ) , if this works , then the problem is the converter.
do not bypass the fuse.

well it has been a few months with the electric power steering installed and all is still working as it should. Took a simple trail ride this past weekend(nothing remotely technical) but had a chance to try it out on some dirt and down hill into some ruts. Everything worked great. I am anxious to get it on a little more aggressive trail and now that the weather is starting to cool down I will be on the trails a lot more.
I can now say that in town and on simple trails this is a great add to the truck. Driving and more importantly parking the 712 is SO MUCH EASIER.
Some of the other pinz owners are seriously considering the unit as it makes the pinz driveable by their wives.
I can not imagine how easy a 710 would drive with this unit installed. Would have to be like driving a modern vehicle.

To date I am very pleased.

My wife has several drives now since the conversion!

what are the specs of the DC/DC converter ? most important to me is amps ...

My choice would be the Victron Energy 24V->12V 70A. More than
necessary but it is compact and affordable and from a very high
quality company.
