cant find detailed pictures of engine swaps in Pinzgauer,,,, anybody here has ??? i would like to see how they manage to swap regular watercooled engines on a pinz (710 ,712).... i was wondering cause the transmission on this vehicles is off-centered... :?: :?: :?:

Pick the engine you like...leave it in the vehicle it came in...then drive that vehicle instead of the Pinzgauer. My point is, it is a waste of time, effort, and money to try to improve on what is already a great engineering design. There is nothing wrong with the stock Pinzgauer engine if tuned correctly. This subject has already been addressed many times.

by no means i would swap the engine in my pizgauers.!! never !! i consider my trucks a treasure the way they are!! it would be like like putting a CASIO electronics on a ROLEX watch!!! :mrgreen:
i just wonder how people have done it.... i just want to see.....

There've been a few over the years here. IIRC, they were diesel, but maybe not all. Given the tranny's off-center location, the Pinz design of laying the pistons down over the torque tube seems brilliant to me. It's hard to imagine a lower center of gravity than that layout. I'd guess another engine layout might have some drawbacks operationally??

I've also heard comments that the rest of the drivetrain isn't robust enough to handle unlimited torque nor RPM's, so sort of, what's the point in a vastly different engine? A bit more oomph here and there would be nice, but frankly it's an incredibly capable thing just stock, in my opinion.

I think Pinzinator makes a valid point. A different engine belongs in a different vehicle. That's why my CJ-5 has a 350 SBC. :twisted:

In my case, I feel like the installation of PinzSSI is like a new engine!

Much better startup, smooth idle, smoother acceleration, reasonably decent speeds on the highway, etc. etc. My 710M is an absolute dream to drive now -- I simply cannot understand why I didn't have it sooner.

Robi's Pinzgauer forum has a lot of what your looking for, here's a couple of threads to get you started...I think the first link has maybe 4 different conversions with good pics of each, the second is interesting as he goes for a slightly unusual approach, its worth a quick look just for interest sake.

The Russian community have been playing with fitting complete Prado running gear including the Transfer case meaning twin Tcases there are two like this I know of...I posted a link here a few months back in a thread called "highly modified 712" that documents one of these crazy builds but you'll have to join the forum to read/view any pics but again its worth a look just out of interest. He's modernized every aspect of his 712 including CTIS, disc brakes and widened the entire body by 200mm just to mention a few things. I reckon this guy must burn money as a second hobby. He has a heap of stuff on you tube as well if your into that.

The pics are just YouTube screenshots from yet another crazy Russian build, looks like another Toyota drive line but not the one I spoke of above.

There's absoulety heaps out there its actually mind boggling that so many of these unique and quite rare vehicles have been butchered in so many different ways. Just google "Pinzgauer diesel conversion" but search images and open the photos that look appealing.

That last pair of photos will be hard on the drivetrain I would think with the automatic and the transfer case increasing the torque - one would need to keep a light foot on the skinny pedal.

Having the engine on top of the drivetrain will result in a very tall engine hump in the cab. Would be interesting to see more photos. I think the other Russian toyota engine conversion had it in the more traditional place next to the center tube? They had to widen the body of the pinz to allow the passenger seat to be fitted back in to it as the engine took up too much space.

Interesting - but way to much work for a marginal result. Seems like it would be better to start with a Volvo C303 as it has a more "traditional" layout and would accept the modifications more readily.

There was suppose to be a swiss guy who put in an air-cooled diesel engine called a "Sun" which is used in mining equipment and is horizontal like the Pinzgauer petrol engine. I had seen a few photos of it in progress but never heard anything more.

Looked up the "SUN" engine and it is now built my VM of Italy. The 4 cylinder turbo version has 110 HP but is limited to 2300 RPM - so not a great choice for a Pinz. Its also not horizontal but allows for severe angled use / mounting.

Interesting, that's not one I've ever heard of I'll check it out.
2300 RPM limit would likely create more limitations, sounds like an engine designed to work at a particular rpm range.

I completely agree with your statement above regarding the C30xx series Volvo's being a better choice than an air cooled Pinz if diesel is your end goal. The more conventional layout, drive line strength and fact that the crown wheel and pinions are available in a few different/higher ratios for Volvo's were some of the key points that helped to influence which direction I chose..

We are starting the build on a 1972 710M that is getting a twin electric motor that will deliver well over 260ft/lb at 0 RPM. Should be great for climbing. We'll also lower the CG a little by installing our batteries in the side pack locations. We'll post pictures as progress moves along on the project.

Does anyone know of any other electric Pinzgauers?
