I am planning on moving my spare tire off the tail gate. While I am at it want to be able to carry two more fuel/water containers. Waiting for axle spindal to arrive for pivot point. I don't like the weight of the tire on tail gate since the 3rd world California roads are tearing the latch up.

I guess you haven't been to Wisconsin lately, huh? Say "goodnight" to your ball-joints. The only good part is that it shakes the rust off!!

Seems like a lot of weight on a single pivot. How about two swing outs - one for the spare and one for the fuel cans? Could even be done Rapier style where they meet in the middle?

I have been running a dual jerry can and spare tire on a built rear bumper for a long time. On longer adventures I even hang a jerry can on the spare tire. Of course the two main jerry cans are for water (we do live in a desert here) and I have the extended range fuel tank already. I did have to add an additional swing point to stabilize the carrier. It moved too much for my liking and I figured over time it would destroy something. I do use my truck offroad a lot and on trails that are not traveled as much as most.

one piece of advice I can give you that I had to go back and add is a way to lock the swing open. Don't always park on level ground and having the ability to hold open the swing is nice.

For my next part in process I drilled pilot hole for 1.25 inch hole saw to cut in spindle sleeve. I am using spindle sleeve to eliminate a lot of welding heat on spindle itself which could cause it to crack.]IMG_2449.JPG[/attachment] I will cut the flange off the hub then weld the hub to the actually swinging part of carrier 2x3 box tubing. As usual pics are out of order. More pictures to follow as process comes along. Ran out of time since I wanted to get front brakes adjusted and wheels drilled out for new lug nuts.

Got the flange removed from the hub and used plasma cutter to cut a half circle in swinging part of carrier that will be welded to the hub.
Got the 1.25 inch holes for mounting the spindal sleeve. Boy, that was some tough old American steel to drill through!

seems like a lot of work when you can just buy one of these.

How much do you think that weighs?

I am trying to keep the tire carrier under 100lbs and under 100 dollars hence using steel I had available.

More pictures. Decided not to use cast hub to weld to. Found this giant nut to machine out. I will incorporate the existing tire carrier into new mount.

Did some more welding, sandblasting and mocking up highlift jack mount today. Waiting for toggle clamp to arrive so I can finish up welding and get it primed.
