1975 710K Restomod (10yr Anniversary)

Build projects, things that guys have come up with to make a Pinz better (or worse?) and aftermarket add-ons.

1975 710K Restomod (10yr Anniversary)

Post by Mr Zero »

Hi all,

This month marks the 10 year anniversary of the purchase of my 710K. At a point when my motivation was greater than it is today I thought that I might put together a thorough retrospective restoration thread. Alas, that surge of motivation was spent on other things, so I'll instead share just a little bit of history and some photos for your review.

From the outset my purpose for a Pinzgauer was to build an overlanding micro-camper. Coming from a couple of Toyota FJ40s, which I used to traverse the many old mining and jeep trails of the Southwest, I knew that I wanted a similar footprint and at least the same or better 4WD capability, but also required a greater cargo capacity for the camper build-out. Long story short my research brought me to the Pinzgauer 710K as the base vehicle for my project. It's now 10 years later and I couldn't be happier with that choice.

You'll see from the photos that this project has been a long series of modifications and revisions. Much of what I've learned and implemented I've gleaned from this forum and I'd like to thank you all for that. I owe particular thanks to Jim Laguardia for his 2.7L motor upgrade, throttle body injection and general service over the years, and Andre Swanson for the fabrication of the custom top, front brush guard, expedition rack, roof rack, fuel tank & battery cages, and numerous other body mods.

For a detailed photo history please go to my Google Photos album here or click the link in my signature.

UPDATE: I've added some additional photos of the interior cargo platform at the bottom of this post.

The evolution (in brief):

No. It's been on my "to-do" list for sometime, but I've not gotten around to it  . I'll post back here when I do.

Great Post! Very nice truck! I have a truck with Andre Swanson (Fat Fabrications) right now - going through the same process. Same idea - micro camper that can take me off-road to explore. Using an AMB as the base though.

Thank you! Andre did a nice job on the fabrication of the custom top and external accessories and was a pleasure to work with. I expect that you'll be happy.

To be clear, the interior cargo storage platform/bed was designed by me and fabricated locally, in Las Vegas NV. That process is a story in itself and resulted in a highly utilitarian cargo system that is well suited to the continued use of the Pinz for technical off-road routes. Just remember to keep your storage and cargo low if you want the continued ability to get a little weird off-road when circumstance calls for it.

Great looking vehicle.
I love seeing all the little detailed mods that make it practical and functional for the owner that only come with use and continual evolution.
Everyone is different and have a setup that works for them and it’s always interesting to see.
Love the paint work too 8)

Thanks for the kudos :D ! It's been a great 10 years with the truck, sorting out what works, what doesn't and making all of the requisite mods along the way. I feel that it's mostly what my family of 2.5 (me, wife & dog) need it to be at this point. I say "mostly" because no project of this type is ever truly complete, is it? It's awesome for overnighters and short weekend trips, as well as multiple week trips through Arizona, Nevada, Oregon and beyond, all of which we do often.

Buying the Pinz was the best bad decision I've ever made!

Okay, the additional images should be appearing now. The images had not yet been moved to a public directory. My bad...
