MGL E-3 (Universal engine monitor)

Post by Picasso »

This seems like a much better option than just getting a CHT unit. Others have pointed out the CHT only version from this mfg.

The E-3 can measure up to 4 EGT/CHT channels, a RPM input, a universal temperature sender input, universal pressure sender input and volts.

Price $255

What I would like to know is should I do EGT or CHT? I wanted to add CHT but dont like our mounting options. Still searching for a temp probe that will fit in on sparkplug. So now Im thinking just watch the EGT side? I'm having a hard time picking what to go with.

Any tips on senders for oil temp/psi would be great for those of you that have them. Mounting locations?

It is better to monitor head temp, but the spark plug type sensors will not fit, and prevent plugs from seating properly.
Best to mount sensors in head, , clamped to lower fin on head or off a lower head stud nut.

Exhaust temp sensors usually have shorter lives than Cyl head temp sensors due to heat and vibration.

I like the guage you chose, it looks like it will work well .
What color is the LCD back lighting?
For Oil pressure tap use a tee off the current oil switch port or remove the thermostat housing and drill and tap the opposite side of the pressure passage band on the housing.
Or send me the sender you choose and I can offer an exchange thermostat housing drilled and tapped to your sensor specs 8)

Back light can be green or yellow. You can also get the same gauge in 3.5" the so called "Velocity range" I'm temped to go with the bigger unit and ditch the speedo.

And I did not know EGT probes should be changed out. I don't think one would out last the pinzgauers and no turbo so dosnt matter if the probe exits.... But you do have me thinking about changing out the one in my truck with 70k miles that just happens to be pre-turbo.

Anyone care to point out some oil pressure senders. The VDO one just seems huge and dated.

Jim,
An exchange might work out since I might have to get my carb shafts redone by you. I've got mass play in the shaft. Do you think it would be better to do a hall pickup for rpm? I'm temped by fuel injection so that takes one part off of the needed list. I will be installing this gauge in two trucks so I need two of everything.

Read the tech sheet completely, all you have to do to pick up rpm is tap into the ground side of the coil just like any other tach and then program for 4 cyl :D
After reading the tech sheet, I would like to get one in the future when funds become available 8)
