Those with roof racks - Whats your clearance?

Build projects, things that guys have come up with to make a Pinz better (or worse?) and aftermarket add-ons.

Those with roof racks - Whats your clearance?

Post by audiocontr »

Looking at buying a metal prefab carport and need to decide on height. Would rather plan ahead.

So far I'm thinking 8' leg height which gives 11' height in the center

Mine is 7'6" with 265 75 tires on original rims. My 712 is the same at the rack but 7'10" at the spot light mount.

Im looking at a carport much like the one behind your pinz. We have very different weather concerns, but do you like the horizontal roofing? Any tips on purchasing?

I've chosen the 24' wide, 26' deep, 8' tall version.

the one in the picture is a 14'W x 40'L x 14'H I have it setting next to a 40' conex box so the west side is shaded completely. Since rain and snow are not a consideration the horizontal roof lines are not a problem. I am fortunate enough to have a metal building place not too far from the house. I just stop in and tell them what I am looking for and they set me up with something close so there is no extra cost for modifications. I also am able to pick up the units in pieces from them and that saves a ton on cost.
My other structure is 12'W x 24'L x 8'H. The roof on that unit goes from front to back with the back being lower. It would be a much better design in rain/snow weather as it would not hold any water/ice/snow on the roof. The pinz fit is both just fine.

As there's no such thing as a "standard" Pinzgauer roof rack, this is a tough question. For what it's worth, without a rack but with running 285 tires, I'm able to fit into the parking garage at my office that has signage that indicates 7' of clearance.

Your rack and results may vary!

The carport I have has 10 ft legs and has more than enough for my Pinz even with the Amb box on.

David,
Those clearance signs are set for the lowest point within the parking structure.
A structure could have another 12" of clearance throughout most of the structure, but for liability reasons are labeled for the lowest point (the headache bar are suppose to be at the height, but sometimes not accurately  ).
