Easy to make Jerry Can Holders (Picture Heavy)
Easy to make Jerry Can Holders (Picture Heavy)
So jerry Can Holders are expensive but can be made fairly easily with a few simple tools.
Tools used: Heavy Vise, Heavy Hammer, Cutoff Tool and a Welder
Materials used: 1.5" x .125" Steel flat stock Count on a 20' stick per Holder, 2" U channel (purchased from Home Depot), 5/16" rod and some Scrap .5" thick stock for locking tab.
It's amazing the variety of bends one can make with a Hammer, Vise and some extras.
Almost all the parts made.
Putting it all together.
Done. Welding the front strap first allows for the rear cross brace's to be adjusted to fit, cross lap welds make this strong enough to climb up if needed.
Holds Old Metal NATO, Scepter Gas and Water Jerry Can Styles
Mounted for tire clearance.
So it took a weekend to finish 2 of these, just need to clean the welds and paint, will add neoprene material to the interior contact surfaces. A few changes were made like a metal tab to keep the NATO can from being opened and a slight re-bend to clear the upper door frame on the driver side.
Hope this encourages others to make their own.

Very nice work, I always enjoy the projects you share with us. It must be cooling down if you’re able to spend enough time in the shop to start fabricating.

Miles:
Nice job on the carrier. I like your Master Lock.
Would that style of lock fit the battery and tool box latches?

Ed, yes the lock works on the boxes, in fact thats what I use them for. Ordered some more from here:

Best price with low shipping. I have seen them sold keyed the same but I couldn't find them.

Re: Easy to make Jerry Can Holders (Picture Heavy)
Those are very nice locks and your work is exceptional. I use standard Master locks. Got a four pack all keyed the same.
Took the levers off the boxes and drilled them out just a bit so the lock hangs straight and does not sit at an angle.

Not the best choice of locks - a locksmith buddy of mine mentioned that they have a problem - check out this video...

from youtube "master trailer coupler bypass" if the link doesn't work.
He recommended the round puck style locks like are used on storage lockers...

I don't think you need to worry about this lock being "bypassed" with a long pick as in the video. Not the best choice of locks - a locksmith buddy of mine mentioned that they have a problem - check out this video...
In fact, I don't even know how Miles gets the key in it!
Seriously Miles, how much does the metal can rattle in it when driving?
Re: Easy to make Jerry Can Holders (Picture Heavy)
When the neoprene strips get installed after final paint they will not rattle at all, a very snug fit.
If someone really wants the gas they can simply punch a hole in the can or cut the metal strap.
