Rear bumper

Build projects, things that guys have come up with to make a Pinz better (or worse?) and aftermarket add-ons.

Rear bumper

Post by westernair »

As I wait for my engine to come back for my hafi from Leonardo, I have decided to build a rear bumper for the Pinz.
So far I have only cut the bulk metal. This weekend I will begin the fabrication. Should weigh 65 lbs w/o the tire carrier.
I am using 1/4 inch 4x6 square tubing as it will allow for the 2 inch hitch to pass through it when connected to where the pintal was, the 1 3/4 DOM will be welded to where the stock braces come off the truck. Mounting points will be the 4 stock bolts below the rear door, the pintal bolts and the stock side braces. I will also at some point weld a s swing arm pivot into it for a swing out tire carrier.

So are you going to tie the body to the drivetrain then? If it connects to both the pintle tow mounts and the stock rear bumper "tubes" then that would allow a lot of vibration to be conducted and also might result in stress cracks etc???

For those that have asked, or dont remember, the front bumper fabrication is here

I know the rear is not of the same design as the front, but this one will go together comparably quick

Keep the hitch mounting and the bumper separate.

Made some progress so far, Next I need to cut and box in the 2 inch reciver pass through and cut the original bumper tubes off of the side braces so I can add the 1.75" DOM. The DOM tubing will extend to the height of the bed and will alow the installation of a removable rear hoop or other accessory down the road. The original bumper plug fits nicely in the tubing.

Weekends have been busy with non-Pinz stuff but during the evenings I have been still working on the bumper replacement. As you can see the blade is finished, now I need to cut the square hole for the 2 inch recever, make the spare tire mount, and weld on the upright bars.
My question now is where should I mount the hinge pin for the tire mount. Anyone have some experience with this and want to share? Also pics of the swing arm would help.

If people wanted some of these Pinzgauer name plates, I could produce them for $30 a pair.
