Tires - convince me.

Build projects, things that guys have come up with to make a Pinz better (or worse?) and aftermarket add-ons.

Maybe time to ask about tubes in radials...

When I picked up my Pinz fresh from Austrian import, it had the standard Austrian Semperit Ameri-grip (marked as radials) that I have seen on all the factory refurbished 71X models from the Austrian military. And all have had tubes in them.

The dealer also said "just run tubes in whatever tire you choose next, and you'll be happier, given that the wheels were designed for tubes in tires".

The tubed tires never lose a bit of air.

1. Anybody running tubes in your radials? If not, how many psi do your tires leak over a month (all tires leak to some degree)?

2. Any idea on improvements on these Semperit tires (i.e. not Swiss/Maloya) since there is a lot of tread and life left in them?

I'm using Dunlop Radial Mud Rovers in 265/75-16 with no tubes. Have had them for a few years with no problems. If there's a Discount Tire nearby, you might watch for sales as they frequently have good deals on tires in this size range.

fyi, the original chains fit on my buddy's 265/75R16, but not on my 255/85s without modifications.

I do not have a Pinz but a Landrover FC 101 but the tyre issues are just a relavant. The 101 comes standard with bias 9.00x16 tyres on 6.5" rims. These are safety rims as I believe they are on the Pinz so can take modern radials without tubes. Be wary of putting tubes in modern radials - the old tubed tyres are relatively smooth inside where modern radials have small ribs moulded into the inside of the tyre. If used with a tube the tube can rub on these ribs particularly when aired down and wear through.

On my 101 I have put on different wider 8" rims and have put on modern BFG MT KM2 radials (315/75 R16) without tubes (makes repairs easier with tyre plugs with the tyre still on the rim) and the difference in road handling, grip and all-round useability is outstanding.

The few Pinzs that I have been offroading with have had Bridgestone ATs and MTs on standard rims without tubes and have performed very well.

The South West Pinzgauer Association had a deal with Treadwright https://treadwright.com/ for a discount on tires a little while ago. Some of the members took advantage of it and have been very happy with the tires and the delivery time, not to mention the price.

Yes - I'm convinced.
Phew. Thank God! :D This thread was getting disturbingly lengthy (but good info).

It shouldn't take that long to convince anybody to ditch their Maloyas. You better write back and let us know how happy you are with your new tires!
