Picked up a really nice M101A2 trailer for the 712M

Build projects, things that guys have come up with to make a Pinz better (or worse?) and aftermarket add-ons.

Picked up a really nice M101A2 trailer for the 712M

Post by Dr-Nuts »

Just picked up a really nice trailer for the Pinz and now just have to install a adjustable Lunette to get the proper height but mainly so the rear door while opening will clear the surge brakes. Going to repaint the trailer to match the Pinz. I ordered a 2 1/2" lunette ring for the hitch so it will better match the Pinz pintle. I wanted to keep the Pinz Pintle instead of getting a receiver adapter for the Pinz. Below is a large number of Pinz pics and trailer pics.

Mark,

Looks like a nice trailer, and I especially like the surge brake. But in my opinion, it's too big to be practical for the Pinz. You can tow it, and I have done so, but it's a bit of a load even empty.

I've got an old M416, and I think others on here do too, and I love it. I literally forget that it's even back there when I'm towing it. Same with the original Swiss trailers, which I towed from Denver to Madison. Even nicer might be a Canadian M101, basically the same as the US M416.

Regardless, I like it, and hope it works well for you. Please report on it after you've put it to use.

The military trailers definitely suit the truck! Are you planning on turning it into an expedition style trailer?

I am thinking of this m101 near me....little rich for me right now.

I believe that is a M416 1/4 ton trailer. After much research the trailer that is the closest to the Swiss army Sutter trailer is the old U.S. Ben Hur trailer from WWII. Finding one today in good shape would be a difficult task. The Sutter trailer in either 1 ton or 1.5 ton configurations is a very handsome trailer to be sure but I was looking for a trailer that would closely mimic the size and shape of the Pinz. The 101A2 is the same height at 84" and the width is 2" greater so an inch on a side which is not much. I have never seen a pic of a canvas topped M101A2 behind a 712M but I will shortly. The trailer is more for fun then anything and it will be used for a yearly hunting trip to upstate NH with 4 buddies. A trip we have been making for over 30 years now. Below is a pic of the Ben Hur trailer and a Sutter unit for comparison.

I had one of those. Sold it. Too heavy for my 710 and I do believe you have the same engine as the 710, right?
Got a M416A and eventually sold that too. Many regrets there. ..but, that is the past.

Those trailers can be stripped down and modifier to not be so heavy and still look good.
Met a guy at the Overland Expo that had a 712 with a trailer that he built specifically for traveling. It was so impressive. Had everything
one could want.

Yes same motor in the 710 and 712 but the tranny has some different gearing to help make up for the extra weight. The M101A2 comes in at 1340 lbs empty. Anyone know what the Swiss army Sutter trailer empty weight is? The Swiss Sutter trailers were all made in the 60s and early 70s and were made for jeeps sized vesicles. They went out of production around the time the Pinz started. I do like the laced cover ties on the Swiss trailer as it is like the Pinz setup.

My friend from Canada has the M101 and it is a bit narrower than the M416. About 3 inches at the box.
We were comparing them on a trip and the question of why my spare for the pinz would fit under the 416 but not his
was answered when we measured them. That was when I was running 33's on my pinz.
He was also able to use a standard size sheet of plywood for his top and I could not figure out why the pics he sent me
of his would not let that sheet work for mine. My top at the flair was 51 inches.

I was able to fit 6 nato cans side by side inside the box for travel though.

As I remember it was some kind of Russian truck for use on the Siberian Tundra. Think that is strange take a look at the land train below.
