Replacing combustion seal on multifuel heater?

Has anyone replaced the seal which prevents combustion gases from entering heated air? Steal soldiers indicates this fiber gasket gets brittle and leaks. I've sourced the fiberglass "string" and I'm ready to rebuild. Has anyone done one before? Any tips? I know I need to use clamps to squeeze it together upon reassembly, but anything else to watch for?
