Spark Plug Tire Pump Kit...

Build projects, things that guys have come up with to make a Pinz better (or worse?) and aftermarket add-ons.

Spark Plug Tire Pump Kit...

Post by TechMOGogy »

Any one ever heard of this or better yet tried it?
Basically you just remove a spark plug and the special valve allows only fresh air in (so your not filling your tire with an lovely air/gas mixture)!
Seems pretty cool and a great way to have "backup on board" air (if it actually works and you added a hose long enough to reach all the wheels and you could deal with all the fuel in that disconnected cylinder!)

Taking a plug in and out is probably not a good idea when there are plenty of other options for filling up your tires.

Agreed but it is an interesting option for an emergency situation perhaps? May not work and may not be a good idea but it could bring out good discussion about on-board air options.
Engine driven compressor
24v compressor (perhaps with tank)
CO2 tank
Hand pump

So.. ??
It uses the engine compression to actuate the tiny-tiny compressor unit and pump up your tires?
This might take awhile, since it's gonna draw in, what, a cm2 of air at .0 bar every other revolution of the engine? The tiny, cheap electrics pump the same volume, but WAY faster..

I used to have one of those 30 years ago - they work, fuel gases do creep in a little and perish the rubber hose but they are a pain to use - burnt fingers getting the spark plug out, trying to cross thread spark threads however for emergency use only is OK but not for regular use.

I would much rather spend a few or more dollars on a battery air pump. Certainly the idea of taking off the dog house and frying my fingers to get a tire pumped up
would not be my choice. Seriously doubt that there is enough umph to re bead a tire. Even a hand or foot pump would be a preferred method.
For a serious long term off road adventure I would (if I did not already have a pump) invest in a CO2 bottle, and (if there were an option) not travel alone.

Happy trails

or do it the Mog way http://www.billcaid.com/2009/MogFest200 ... pMain.html

edit: I guess I should add the ether method is not something I intend to try. I spent enough time mounting tires in the military to have a great respect of the dangers involved mounting tires even with all the correct tools and methodology.

Ok
I will agree that the spark plug device is almost as redneck as the spray can bead method

But look at the money they saved by doing it at home with ether. And they probably didn't like that rim anyway.

Well if you are 1500km from the nearest tyre dealer and you have staked your two spare tyres and have just put on your spare tyre carcass you may not have much choice in the method of seating the bead. If done correctly unlike the idiots in the vid is a relatively safe way to seat the bead if practised.

I've had good luck using ratchet straps and as I don't ether. :|
