Extended range tank

Build projects, things that guys have come up with to make a Pinz better (or worse?) and aftermarket add-ons.

Extended range tank

Post by Jimm391730 »

Andre made a 43 gallon tank with guard that still holds a single jerry can (behind small panel; the panel and tubing around it hinges down). To take the weight it uses three of the truck ribs under the body for support. It extends outward further than the stock tank, but looks good with the larger, wider tube rubrails. Now I just need to take it on a long trip!

Wow. That's really nice. What does a modification like that cost?

(I'm still in the basic rehab or doing the maintenance, basic
upgrades, etc., but I will be at that point in about 2 months)

Very nice!
I like how you/Andre were able to keep the jerry can!
Question - are the lower panels screwed/riveted on or welded in place? Just not sure what the silver dots are.
Andre needs to build a catalog of all the different things he has built!

Screwed in place with stainless button head screws, so those panels are replaceable. I love the fact that the jerry can is almost invisible, but still lockable. To get the 43 gallon volume we had to go longer, wider, and deeper - but the tank is still higher than the chassis tube, and the guard is about an inch inset than the outside edge of the rubrails. It has an internal fuel injection pump, with a fuel sock to prevent any crap from getting to the pump (but no red death in this tank!). Still has the heater fuel pickup. Three baffles to prevent fuel slosh. Fuel returns two baffles away from the pump, so any foaming has time to die down.

Andre did an excellent job, the inlet pipe was perfectly centered in the hole in the cab floor. And when I went to mount it I spent only about 20 minutes getting it up and all screws in place, without any help.

As usual, cost varies based upon specifics, This one was 16ga sheet steel with 1/8" reinforced bungs for mounting the custom sender and in tank fuel pump. The thank guard mounts within the space of the outer most hangers. and helps support the weight of the tank.

cost with powdercoating, $1600 as seen. Other options available.

Excellent work. From the last pic it looks as though the new tank drops lower forward of the spare can and is behind the removable panel.

What is the interior of the new tank if there is no coating as in the original tanks?

Raw steel is the interior of the tank. Just like motorcycles. So long as tank is full when stored outside, condensation will be minimal.

SWPA is doing the Mojave Road April 17th-20th. That should be a long enough trip to test its range. We leave Needles on the Thursday and end up in Barstow area on Sunday.
