Spare Tire Mount

Post by Pinz710m2 »

I searched the forum and found that no one directly
mentioned a spare tire mount for aftermarket wheels
that keeps the outside of the wheel facing out.

Ideally, I would like to mount my spare with the original
plate (the one with the chain hanging on it) but turned
facing out. Can anyone tell me the specific maker of
those? Or do I need to fab something myself?

Cold War made one for $165 but do your due diligence with Cold War and make your own mind up as to whether you will ever see the product once you have paid for it.
Only photo they have of it:

If I were you I would make one (or have Andre fab it) or use the empty space in the rim for storage - I am attempting to make one of these:

That's a good idea. I'm getting a set of wheels from Tom Cepek,
and since I'm getting such nice wheels, I want them to face out.
I'll check with Andre since it's something he could easily ship.

Here's a pic of a 712 with the same wheels:

I really like that spare tire storage.

I like them too - except for the price! $474 USD - usuaully a G-wagen item for those with deep pockets I guess... I've considered making one using the laser cutting table at a local maker space I just joined... but too many other projects are more pressing.

Here is a good shot of one open and empty:

I have a pile of pictures of various ones I can post if people are interested?
I have always wanted one.
Perhaps if enough people want one we could get a small production run made.
If interested PM me or post here
I will get it priced out if there are 5+ people interested

I always wanted one too, and have it under my spare tire cover. No one would ever suspect its there.

It seems like it could be done really simply, if you can find a way for that outer ring to sort of brace itself on the rim of the wheel. The inner plate wouldn't be needed. Or could it just use the other side of the wheel instead of that plate?

I've also been interested in something like this. Years ago, someone made a canvas-like tire cover which had a zipper to gain access to the inside and a small lock. These only came in Jeep-like sizes, so I never ordered one, but it was simple and at much less $$$ than the one illustrated. I've since lost the link, and they were discontinued anyway, but another idea.

I bought a pack cover from an on-line military surplus store and put a zipper in it to allow the chain for the tire to work.
I have wanted something like that for awhile but did not want to spend that many bucks for something to hold so little. I could not see how it held on to the tire till I saw these photos, seems simple and quite well done.

I remembered the name of the canvas one I mentioned. Pakkratt. Some photos can be found HERE: http://www.pakkratt.com but no longer available. There blurb lists the ability to wrap a snatch strap around the tire under the cover, then store some supplies inside.

I'm interested too. I've looked at these for a while, but the price was way too much for me.

This is what I came up with. After cost of water jet materials and hardware, I can get these out for $180 and have a modest profit.

Call it $210 with P/C and a sticker.
