I can't help but wonder if the Pinzgauer engine would have enough power to drive the vehicle with such a reduction in gearing?
I put the TD overdrive tranny in my 712W (which also has Jim L.'s 2.7l "torquer" conversion). I get exactly 60mph at 3000 rpm in 5th (overdrive) and while that just barely works with the additional power, the Laycock ratio seems slightly better (7% lower ratio) which I would prefer. Plus, with the OD you don't lose the low ratio of first gear (the TD tranny trades first for the overdrive 5th). If proven reliable, I'd say it is definitely a better solution.

Keep me in mind if you decide to put a kit together! Nice work!

It has been working flawlessly. Still, when I hit that red button and the truck calms down and almost shoots forward while entering the freeway, I have to grin. I guess it hits the right torque band when the RPMs drop back down, because I swear it feels like a turbo boost.

This sure is nice. A way better solution than a TD tranie.

The key here is your pick of the shaft with constant velocity joints.
Would be near impossible to eliminate vibration with u-joints.
Impressive bit of engineering.

Hmmm, now you got me thinking about my TD tranie.

Good technical write up on the care and feeding of the J Type OD unit.

Bump!

So, how is it working after a few years? I suspect very well as there are hot rods with this overdrive unit and turbo volvos that have a lot more power and torque.

I'm curious about a couple things, had you considered a P type, which is supposed to be a later, slightly more robust version, and has anyone else yet copied your daring exploit?

Keep up the good work!

Beez,

It's been working perfectly. I found out later on that the OD unit by way of serial number, was from a Volvo 740 Turbo. This had 180 HP!

I found another off Ebay only a few K away (serial number) for $175 as a backup.

So..... I'm not too concerned about robustness. I have an oversize sump and have measured the oil temp several times. No problems.

Time will tell, but freeway driving at 60-65mph is soooo nice.

Excellent! That's some beautiful work!
Have you been able to measure any change in mpg with the o.d.?

It's been working perfectly. I used to have a button on the dash that illuminated when activated but I got tired of reaching forward to turn it on and off. So i installed a simple
remote controlled relay to activated it. It's a transmitter (they use a car alarm key fob), stuck to the steering wheel. Only a touch of the thumb and it turns on and off. A light
on the dash reminds me of its status. Ridiculously slick.
