Stereo in a Pinzgauer

Post by Pinz710m2 »

I was reading a few posts about putting decent stereo
in a Pinz and I really didn't see any great solutions. Since
this is kinda "my thing" I thought I post my version.

I started off looking for something that could be mounted
on a stalk, a lot like the old Blaupunkt units. Nothing exists.
After a lot of searching I found a stereo made for classic cars
that is completely remote controlled. A small black box about
6" x 7" x 2" will mount behind the safety wall, and the only wiring
necessary is the power and speakers. I've never used this unit
Before, so I'll post results and pics after it arrives.

I saw your link and it looks like a fine unit, especially if hidden well from prying eyes.

I got a cheap $29 radio at WalMart (?) it works great. Mounted above the centre of the pinz and with all the noise created by this vehicle it performs quite well.
I got it before I had locks and wasn't going to put an expensive unit in there to become an add on Craig's list.

I really enjoy the various things folks get to make their vehicles comfortable and fun to use. Thanks for posting another fine item.

Thanks for posting this. I was wondering if Classsics was still in business, this saves me from finding them :D
I had bought hidden speakers from them when they were a new company in the Santa Ana area. They were just starting the remote radios with retro faceplates.

I never had the dexerity for the hand remotes, but this is what the GG will get.

Why not solder cat 5 cable to the connectors on your removable face plate? Makes any removable faceplate remote.

@ DavidDunn - I'll take some pics and post the installation. I have read
good reviews about the company, so I'm expecting a pretty good product.
I'm planning to mount the main unit on the back side of the wall between
the cab and passenger area. I'll also paint it swiss army green so it looks
like just another box bolted to the vehicle. Thieves won't even know
what it is. The speakers will be mounted in the padding above the front
passenger's heads, and ... tweeters somewhere TBD. I'm also adding a small
powered subwoofer that I've installed before on past vehicles, and gets supported
by a 2 Farad capacitor to keep from drawing too much power from my 24V - 12V
converter. It only costs about $115 and really supports the stereo well.

Converter already installed. Stereo has been shipped (should be here the 24th)
and speakers ... I gotta go find some.

I could not find any specs about the speakers or the amps?
Do they have any regarding power, watts, distortion, ohms etc?
Looks like a neat idea if you need a radio

@Techmogogy - I'm going to see how large of speakers I can fit in the
padded areas, and then put some tweeters somewhere TBD. There
are some powered subwoofers on the market that are roughly
13" x 10.5" x 3" and I was comparing specs on them now. I'm leaning
toward one that is for marine use because water won't be an issue. I
think it runs $135, but it's white and needs to be Swiss Army Green. :)
A little masking tape and rattle can spray paint will remedy that.

Pics for me are not needed. My truck is completely different than any other out there...including the SDP(and early ATL) 716/18s. The radio install is nothing compared to what the HMMWV A/C installation will be, without drilling holes in the truck.

David,

PM me if you like. I'm in the middle of the HMMWV air install now and would like to bounce some ideas around. I'm in the east bay area (not too far)
