2.7 Liter Engine w/ Torque Cam?
I've read some posts from Dennis Linden stating his personal opinion of the Goatwerks 2.7 liter engine is that it definitely makes more horsepower, but at the expense of the standard engine's tractable low rpm torque.
In other words, good for highway and mountain driving, not so good for plain ol' offroading.
But I've also read other posts wherein Jim LaGuardia mentions he has a torque cam for the aircooled engine. So wouldn't a 2.7L engine with the torque camshaft be the best of both worlds?

Re: 2.7 Liter Engine w/ Torque Cam?
I have Jim LaGuardia's 2.7l, "torque" cam grind, and slightly higher compression pistons, all done at the same time many years ago. Using the stock carbs I got an increase in torque across the rpm band which might peak higher in the 2000 to 4000 rpm range but that does not mean that there is a deficit of torque outside those speeds. On the dynometer it made more power across the full rpm range (roughly 20-30% more than stock).
I would definitely do it again.

Thread necromancy!
Anyone else have experience with the LaGuardia 2.7 big bore w/ torque cam?

The 2.7 with cam was a noticeable improvement.
Still started off in second gear even with the 710 transfer case in the 712.

Adding Scotts PS kit so that delayed completion

Re: 2.7 Liter Engine w/ Torque Cam?
I have 2.7L + EFI and getting 120hp+ on the Dyno. The real reason for this conversion in the
first place was the need for 60+ MPH on the HWY -- but NOT just by running the engine at higher
RPM which would not be a good idea. The upgrade also required a gear ratio change, moving to
the TD tranie (4'th is OD) -- yes you loose out some on low end crawling.
The key point is what's the real need here for more torque? The standard Pinz and gear ratios are
pretty darn good as is, but if you are going to change your gearing you will need to increase your
Torque as well.
IMHO the ideal setup for a 710 would be: 2.7L(EFI) + TD Tranie + 712 Xcase.
The 712 Xfer case is on my long list of future mods.

The 710 case is desired by the 712 guys, shouldn't have a problem swapping yours I would think?

This seems like the way to OD a Pinz

So izzat 120hp "on the dyno" just the engine itself being dynoed or actual 120 rear wheel hp? Surely just at the engine crank, methinks?
And I agree that simply turning higher revs at highway speed would be pretty stoopid. I'm assuming the loss of some of the low end torque, therefore, comes from the gear ratio change and not so much a difference between powerbands of the 2.7 versus the 2.5?
Re: 2.7 Liter Engine w/ Torque Cam?
As measured at the rear wheels using factering the gear ratio, done by John at Outfront Motorsports'.
http://www.outfrontmotorsports.com/ It's somewhat qualitative and based on John's
expertise. Yup, you loose torque with the TD tranie, but you gain back some with the 2.7 mods.
The Torque vs. RPM curve is definitely steeper than stock.

TechMo, have you got your rig right, yet? What's the verdict on your new 2.7 engine?
