how noisy are the c300 series

Post by mjnims »

I know this is not really tech related but there is no general chat area for the Volvo. I finally saw a Volvo the other day in south Phoenix/Tempe area. I pulled up next to him but could not get him to look. I had all the people around me thinking I was crazy with all the noise I was making but the guy did not notice us. Are these trucks really that loud inside. All of the pinz owners I have come across have at least waved.

Actually the c 303 series are very quiet trucks to drive. On the highway at speed the only thing that is apparent to the driver is the "Wah Wah" sound of the tyres. The engine even thought you are sitting over it like the Pinz always has an unhurried sound to it.

That engine incidently like the Steyr product is almost bullet proof and has a great reputation amongst the Volvo specialist shops as being extremely durable. I would put the sound level somewhere between a LR V8 109 series and its 4 banger counterpart. Not quite as civilized as a Rangie or as noisy as the Pinz. As with this "proprietory unit built" machine from Volvo the unit lacks the quality of build of the Steyr product. That factor alone sets the Pinz out there as the bench mark of quality construction.

Mjnims,

I can't say for other Volvos, but my C303 is exceptionally quiet at stoplights. Even with the engine cover off! It does get louder of course at highway speeds, what with the huge knobby tires and the radiator fan, but it's probably not unlike the noise level encountered with a 2-door Jeep. I will say that at stoplights, if I have the radio on I can't hear people outside of the vehicle unless they're honking their horn. But if I had to guess, I'd say the person driving that particular truck was probably so used to people waving to him and such, that he makes a habit of ignoring people when stopped. I have such a hard time getting out of parking lots that I typed up an information sheet and taped it to one of the side windows- believe me, it helps! Even then, it's not always easy to make a quick getaway.

I just thought the guy had an attitude. I have an air horn in the pinz and could not get his attention. I do understand the radio thing. I turn mine up every now and again. I guess I am just one of those people who is always looking around to see what is going on. I made up business cards with the SWPA website on them and hand them out to people that way more questions aren't generated by the answers given to their original questions. I would really like to get out with one of the Volvo's if for no other reason than just to see them in action. Maybe there will be one at the RMP Treffen in August.

C306 noise

Post by Roy Gardiner »

According to UK importer Richard Dover, the C306 only gets noisy at high cruising speeds - i.e. 60 mph, though he did admit to wearing earplugs for really long journeys, eg Scotland to English Midlands - around 200 miles on the motorway.

I have to say that the engine sounded very sweet (and quiet) on his 46K mile example I checked out last week, prior to purchasing the ambulance version for conversion to a camper.

To reduce revs (i.e. noise) how big can we realistically go on tyre sizes for a C306?

I understand a crown wheel and pinion change to gear-up is unrealistic on these axles, as the C303 high rear diffs won't support the PTO that drives the rear-most axle on the C306....??

Tis me, the afore said Richard.

My 6x6 is almost silent at town speeds but get above 40mph and the tranmission whine from the rear PTO (to axle 3) and the tyres is nothing short of deafening inside the truck. I suspect that a large amount of the noise in the cab is from the prop fan but I am fitting a 16" Kenlowe blower fan to the outside of the rad which should release a few BHP and reduce the noise.

I have invested in F1 style pit crew headphones with an intercom system for 4 people so we can talk to each other and tae hell with soundproofing! It also takes the stereo and the CB with the possibility of upgrading to radio comms for the driver and co driver.

I'll post o picture of the 11.5 x 35.5" tyres as soon as I've got a decent one but in the meantime .....

oops - will sort it shortly

My C304 seems silent compare to the Slantback Humvee I had.
