The front axle button on my truck (just got it yesterday) is stuck IN. Is this expected or is there a trick to disengaging ?

Those switches have been known to fail over time.

Claes at Tatanka Parts offers this as a replacement. It is aparently a repurposed emergency flasher switch.

Is the yellow light above the switch remaining on? Keep in mind that the front axle will engage during vigorous brake application, autmatic engagement when the transfer case is placed in low range and, of course, when the red button is pushed when in high range rear wheel drive.

Hope this helps.

Jim made most of the points I was going to mention. In short, there's a lot that goes on engaging the front axle under different scenarios. My front axle button used to stick when I first got the truck.Maybe it hadn't been used much. Sometimes I had to wait until all the vacuum was bled off the system for it to release. Over a period of time it corrected itself (with use maybe).

Download a copy of the shop manual if you haven't already. Also the diagrams in the parts lists are handy.

Good luck.

Thanks all it did eventually release after fiddling with it. I'll try engaging and disengaging it over time and see if it gets happier :)

Hopefully you are completely changing all fluids before driving it much.

Yes sir - I checked them all yesterday. Portals were filled to inspection port with clean fluid, same with transfer and transmission - all looked in great shape. The only oil that seems to need attention is the engine which is full but looks end of life.
