timing light

Post by krick3tt »

I am relatively new to maintenance on the pinz. I have just completed the tail light conversion to add brake lights to the red lens. Success!
Phil has given me the lowdown on installing an intermittent wiper switch and that is for tomorrow.

The next adventure is setting the valve clearance. I have a new set of gaskets should they be required, as I do not know how this was done by the last mechanic. I have read about the procedure and it seems very similar to the old VW I had.

On the VW I used a static timing light to determine the correct position of the distributor to set the timing. ...or should I get a real timing light?
Is this procedure something I can do with a petronix setup? Are there preset marks on the pinz to determint the TDC for the firing of cylinder #1? I have the owners manual but do not have the shop manual, Is the shop manual going to be required for routine maintenance?

Cheers,
