Mystery Noise in the 303

Post by Captain Crank »

Hi,

Had a weird couple of noises come and go yesterday, here's what happened......

Went down a very long steep grade and heard what sounded like an exhaust leak. Sort of a muffled fluffing sound. Like a hole in a muffler or a really bad leaky pipe joint.

But the exhaust system is all new and has no leaks whatsoever.

After reaching bottom of hill and accelerating on level ground, there was kind of a chirping/ slapping noise for maybe a minute that sounded like a zip tie was attached to the drive shaft.

Being with some jokers that was the first thing I looked for.

Seemed to come from near the engine, passenger side.

We pulled the cover while driving and couldn't pinpoint the source.

It did this a couple other times down the road for less than a minute each time.
IIRC it was always when accelerating from a stop.

Went 80 miles today and heard nothing.

Before I start looking at belts and other places..... is there something in the vacuum system that could have caused this?
The long ( I think second gear, just using engine as brake) run down that hill is when the funny noises all started.
I wonder if there was a huge amount of vacuum created?
Not real familiar with that system yet.

Thanks for any thought or ideas you guys may have.

The more I drive it, the more I love it.

John

Dry bearing in a propshaft UJ?

Something caught in a brake drum?

Had just lubed all the cross joints.

This noise was not out by the wheel drums.

But after you mentioned that, I may take a look at the parking brake on the rear propshaft and see if something might be going on there.

Thanks
