Volvo ratios

Post by M Wehrman » Mon Jan 10, 2011 4:42 pm

Is there a difference in transfer case or portal gearing between the 4x4 and the TGB trucks? Kinda like the difference in a Pinz t-case with the 710's and the 712's? Been driving the TGB lately and trying to determine a sane cruising speed. I hear the 303's can cruise at 75. I'm not looking for that but 65 seems to be a bit of a scream with this truck. If there was another gearing option, I might look that way...

The gearing in the portals are all the same for civilan C-type and military truck TGB-type this is also for the transfercase.

The transmission is different. The 4x4 has lower gears than the 6x6. The 6x6 also has 4 gears and an overdrive but the 4 gears are lower than on a 4x4. You can swith the transmissions if you will but you will not gain topspeed.....

My TGB11 drives 115kms/hour....

Thanks,that was what I was looking for. Only thing different is that my truck has a 4-speed box...

If anyone is chasing 5.99 ratio ring and pinions, give Jez an email.

He's looking to do another batch but needs numbers first.
380 pound or 350 each for 3 or more.

Tell him Hec (from Australia) sent you.

There's some confusion here I think.

The 6x6's have lower gears in the axles. Top speed is about 54, realistically. Top speed in a 4x4 is def. not 75, more like 60, realistically. 75 would throw a rod or something similar. Finding three diffs for a 4x4 to 6x6 swap is usually the hard part. Your power plant is the other issue.

People push them of course, but those are practical top speed figures.

here some experiences from our German Autobahn. Sorry for my bad english :roll:

Topspeed of a C303 should be nearly 80 mph (= 128 kmh)
Travelingspeed ist between 55 - 60 mph ( 85-100 kmh)

Last Weekend we did some kilometers in a little convoy with two TGB 1314 and three C303.
Travelingspeed was about 90 kmh (57 mph). So you dont get in trouble with the Trucks.
Fuelconsumption is about 18 L/100km (13 mpg) or 20l/100km or 12mpg for the TGB 1314

If you have problems to get this speed or if you have much more fuelconsumption you should check your ignition and carburators.

Regards
Uli

I guess we will have to agree to disagree on that one. I def. don't see those figures on a perfectly tuned 303 (which I owned and drove 1000's of miles on highways and off-road) and I don't think 80 would ever be possible and if it was, your truck is going to last 10% as long as it would have by following what it's built to do, which is about 60, tops. I will also bet money on not getting 13mpg at those speeds. That simply isn't possible because of basic physics.

Vince, you are right, 80 mph ist not the speed you should do all the time.
I did this just for testing if everthing is well tuned. 99% i do not more than 60 mph.
As an example, last year we went in holiday to spain. That was about 3000km.
We had a trailer with 3 motorcycles hang up at the C303. Travellingspeed was about 85-95kmh (50-60mph).
Fuelconsumption was about 18-19 L/100km what is 13-12 mpg.

As I told you. You have to check your ignition and your carbs. If you never have opend your carbs they need a lot of fuel.
The original Strombergs for the C303 are running realy rich. For the first mesurment I had about 11%CO. After i had redone them I had 3,5% CO. Running is great an fuelconsumption is "low".
The Ignition should run on 10degree preignition, and for that you need 98OctFuel.

1 Liter fuel in Germany is more than 2Dollars, so you have to look for your fuelconsumption !

My Volvo now runs on LPG. So it uses 20% more. But 1 Liter LPG you get for 1 Dollar.

I have hit 12mpg with my TGB1317 (key fob says so!), speed is the key 55-60 mph,no real mountains. with my 315 tires,I can hit 80+,but it's a thirsty beast! I also must confess it's running a 30+yr old CIS injection system.It's kinda close,has some issues,but better than carbs! The Volvo is a more "challenging" beast at times with respect to parts. Put original aside and it's a real good machine,I would not hesitate to have another!
Maybe fodder for another post; what would you rather have,a 6x6 Pinz or a 6x6 Volvo? Only those who have driven both may chime in! :)

Anyone making assumptions about incorrect fuel economy figures be aware that American gallons are smaller than the gallon measurement in most of the rest of the world, so figures would seem unbelievable.
I think that the difference is about 20% from memory.

Totally agree with Vince, 80mph seems fast. 55-60 is what I feel comfortable doing.

Perhaps to answer the first question:-

Portal box reduction = 2.06:1 - all versions

Diff ratios =
9x33 = 3.666666 (x 2.06 = 7.553333:1) - TGB20 6x6
9x31 = 3.444444 (x 2.06 = 7.095555:1) - TGB13 6x6
11x32 = 2.90909 (x 2.06 = 5.992727:1) - TGB11 4x4

Transfer Case ratio = all versions
High 1:1
Low 2.39:1

TGB 11 and 13 have a 4 speed gearbox
TGB 20 has a 5 speed gearbox (longer)

Cheers,
Ian.
