C303 engine removal/rebuild

Post by Jim LaGuardia »

I am currently removing the engine from Greg's C303.
I finally got the EFI dialed in only for the bottom end to start knocking and losing oil pressure at idle when warm.
I suspect to find a few badly worn cam lobes when I get it out as well as worn rod bearings.
Right now , the trans and transfer case are out and I am working on pulling the head off as the engine comes out the bottom :(
I will post some pictures soon.......................

Sounds like it's breaking faster than you can fix it! Bound to be a strong runner when you're done.

Mark,
That is cold. I still have my Haflingers to keep me busy. I also have a 4Runner Trail Edition that is quite capable offroad and serves as my daily driver.

Greg

I hate it when you fix something and another part lets go . Hope you get it fixed and running soon. I suspect yours will be up and running again before mine :)

The engine is out  , and according to Jim, the cam and 4 lifters failed  . Cyls # 1,2,3, and 6 intake lobes/lifters failed due to metal fatigue  .
Everything looks rebuildable :D .

Greg

According to my Volvo parts expert, cam and lifter failure is very common with this engine type. I would suspect high milage/overheat (had bad water pump for a long time) had a hand in the failure.
I'll put some cam pics up later.

I guess in the past someone just kept on adjusting until the noise went away! :( Are there any performance cams available?
