Exhaust system, backpressure, and replacement.

OK, by searching the Yahoo group extensively, I know that the exhaust was routed away from pedestrians, which is why it exits on the driver's side.

I also know that the reason for the two mufflers is for proper exhaust backpressure, needed for a properly tuned engine.

But, when the exhaust system is done for, can proper backpressure be achieved with a single muffler, and simpler routing, for less that the cost of a stock system?

If so, how is backpressure measured, and reproduced?

When mine went I replaced it with a Mustang GT muffler. In and out were on the same end. Runs fine. You can always adjust backpressure thru exhaust sizing,that is if you can really tell the difference in performance..

Just a technicality, but backpressure isn't the issue, it's a byproduct of correct exhaust flow velocity.

If your exhaust is too large the air will stagnate and the scavenging effect is lost. If the exhaust is too small then the pressure will go up, because the flow goes down. Pressure is a symptom however and not the problem.

I found a perfect solution, which was tested well, in a single Flowmaster muffler.

Thanks, guys! Kinda thought as much. Vince, so putting it simply, have a shop cut off everything from the muffler back, Flowmaster muffler, then a short tailpipe out the pass side, right?

Basically yeah but it should be bent in a way to maximize ground clearance. You need a shop that is used to doing custom work and understands what you want. Most will ruin a 4x4 by hanging pipes down way too low.
