Having trouble getting cv boots to seal in place...is there a special tool needed or an easier way to change these boots?

I know this message is 1 year old... But where can I get parts local to Southern California? I am in need of the front CV boots, and the "flex coupling" that goes on the ends of the radiator fan shaft. The rubber blew out of one of the four joints in the coupling. Might be time for that electric fan setup!

You don't seriously think there are 303 parts local to SoCal, do you?

Volvos are great trucks but the reason why I have a Pinz is the availability of parts. You almost always have to scour the earth to find what you are looking for.
Having recently purchased a Hafy, I am finding kinda the same thing...

I have CV boots and difflock diaphragms en route from Sweden as we speak. I got the boots from www.fmv4x4.com and chose these as they are polyurethane rather than rubber. I think new old stock rubber boots are not going to hold up well after all these years, so I am hopeful the polyurethane replacements are better. I will update the group here when I can comment on them after seeing how they perform.

Received the new boots , rt side replaced will get left side done now.
They look to be much better quality than the N.O.S. rubber ones that failed. Hardest part of rt side install(aside from unclamping the servo and installing a wedge to engage the slip coupling) is keeping the boot straight so it lays in the sealing pinch ring while securing the knuckle to the axle housing.



If I have time I'll take a few more pic's when the left side comes apart.

For anyone looking to replace their CV boots, I want to point out that I had a great experience with FMV4x4. They were very responsive and they have what is probably a superior product than the original due to using materials that should hold up better over time.

With a little help of my friend:


To fix the boot you don´t need any sealant or anything like that.
Make sure that everything is clean. Than first fix the rubber lip between knuckle and axle housing !
When the 8 bolts are tightened you can press the metal ring in the housing.

The metal ring of the boot can be pressed in with two tyre levers. Works well.

If you first press in the metal ring, the boot would be sustained and the rubber lip slips out while trying to fit the knuckle to the axle housing.

Hi folks
I've got a shopping cart with boots from FMV4X4 and Tatanka and various brake parts. Are the Ballots in? Do we have a favorite? Is the difference in Poly urethane from FMV been a success? Any "this side of the pond" sources. I hesitate as I just installed "New old stock" and had a hole show up due to dry rot by the time everything was bolted together. Any suggestions or input?

I also might mention. I will be looking for suggestions on disc brake conversion part designs. I have perused the threads and I'm thinking there might be a solution yet to be had. I specialize in problem solving and have a pretty well equipped versatile shop to back up the designs. Any other thoughts would be grand.

So far the polyurethane boots I got have been holding up without issues.

I am trying to disconnect the steering from the wheel carrier to start working on putting a new cv boot in. The service manual refers to a puller tool. Of course, I don't have one in my pocket right this moment....anyone any ideas on how to get the steering off without breaking it?
