303 Back firing

Post by Cole Wilson »

I have a 1977 Civilian 303. It has started back firing through the carbs. It seems to be worse under a load (climbing hills etc.) I am curently running a points ignition. I was wondering if anyone has an idea if the problem? Thanks Cole

There are a few things that can cause backfiring through the carb, Most obvious would be water in the distributer cap or on points(dry and wipe down with WD-40).
Also check the timing, low float level in carb(lean pop), broken vac lines causing a vac leak.
Could also be a tight or burnt intake valve.
A leak down test would verify if it was a valve.
